Why is Login Autofill gone from Front Page of WordPress.com?

  • Unknown's avatar

It appears you’ve done an “upgrade” to the entry portal, among other things, and now I no longer see a login field that Safari can autofill, causing me to have to take at least one additional step to login. Are you still debugging this? I noticed issues first earlier this week, when the new screen first appeared, and when I did take the extra step to login, it wouldn’t take me to my master landing page anymore, and I wouldn’t have access to my account until I actually entered one of my blog addresses. You seem to have resolved that issue now, but I still do not see the login field on your front page. Is that intentional, or is it an issue you either have yet to notice or are trying to fix?

    Thanks, Zach

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hey Zach!

When I visit WordPress.com in Safari, I see the following screen:

Safari should be able to autofill those fields provided you have saved the login details in your Safari keychain.

Can you let me know if you’re experiencing a different front screen at WordPress.com on your Safari browser?

Sorry to take so long responding. I got very busy with work.

I usually see the screen you posted in the cloud, but for about a week, I kept getting automatically redirected to a page that was trying to get me to try out WordPress.com… something I didn’t need to do, as I’m already hooked and sold. But that also meant that I was diverted away from the very login screen you shared, with its lovely auto-filling of my user name and password, meaning I had to take two extra steps to login. And when I did login, the landing page wouldn’t load properly, leaving me unable to navigate until I went to one of my blogs, at which point the navigate bar up top finally appeared.

The good news is that it all seems to have resolved itself, so perhaps the IT Geek gods were already aware and working on this bug in the background. (And I am assuming some sort of system upgrade took place around then that affected these particular pages.) Unfortunately, I was unable to get any screen shots at the time, but if it happens again, I will try.

    Anyway, thanks again.

    Hey Zachary,

I’m glad this is resolved now! Please let me know if it occurs again.

    Cheers!

Okay, it’s doing it again. When I go to wordpress.com in Safari, this is what I see:

Screen Shot of WordPress.com main portal

It is not just going to the default, autofill login page, and when I do click the login link, autofill keeps defaulting to my other account, and then, once logged in to this account, the landing page is dashboard for our mother blog, instead of going to my Reader, like is normally does and should. This started again on Monday or Tuesday.

    Any idea what’s going on?

    Thanks, Zach

    Hey Zach,

So, we recently changed the login page at WordPress.com. So, the front page you see is the new login page. That new page will not have a login form on it. If you would like to be directed straight to the login page, you’ll need to update your bookmark to this URL:

    https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php

Regarding the populated login information, it sounds like Safari may have the wrong log-in information stored for WordPress.com. Can you try the following?

    1. Navigate to Safari -> Preferences
    2. Click “Passwords”
    3. Click all instances of WordPress.com and click “Remove”. This will effectively remove all saved login info for WordPress.com.
    4. Navigate to the login URL linked above
    5. Enter your login information as usual. You should be prompted to store that login info in your Safari keychain.

That should clear up the login issue. Give that a try and let me know if you experience any trouble!

Not a problem! Did that fix the issue?

Fix probably isn’t the right word, but it does make sense. I suspect the initial problem I had was when you all were just tinkering with switching over the autofill login to a secondary login page. That reverted back for a while, but now that I do need to go to a secondary page, I am able to set my browser to take me there by default and skip the front page, saving me a step.

That said, it still isn’t then going to my account landing page, which I had set for my Reader. Instead, it is going to the Dashboard for seattlefarmersmarketassociation by default now, which is kind of annoying, as I rarely actually want to go to that page. (It’s the least active of the various market blogs I manage on this account.) Is there a way to fix that?

Also, in terms of the autofill issue I am having, since I manage two different WordPress.com accounts, and the other one has a user name that is earlier in the alphabet, that one is autofilling by default now instead of this one. Used to be it would default to the last account I logged into. But I suspect you are right that that is ultimately a Safari thing, not a WordPress thing.

So, thanks again, and any ideas on getting me back to a default landing page of my Reader would be most welcome!

    Hey Zachary,

Regarding the redirect issue, can you try changing your login URL to the following?

    https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.com%2F

That should tell your browser to redirect to WordPress.com instead of your Dashboard when you login. Let me know if that works on your side!
