Why is my blog moving incredibly slowly?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve tried this once before, but here goes nothing. Back in September/October, I imported a wealth of blog posts to my personal WP blog. Since then, anytime I log onto my dashboard to edit any of this content (or create new content), my WP slows down to almost non-active, to the point that it takes me about 30 minutes to insert 3/4 pics and align some text. I’m about ready to give up on the blog, as it’s become uselessly slow, and has forced me to not do anything with it in almost half a year. I’ve tried this from different computers, same result.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    See here http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/nVgPI0goL/http://ninjabynight.wordpress.com/

These are the ways to reduce page loading time:
    1. Edit posts and insert “the more tag” so only excerpts appear on the fort page. http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

    2. Reduce the number of posts appearing on the front page here > Settings > Reading
Blog pages show at most _ posts

    3. Reduce the number of images displayed and/or make them smaller.

    4. Reduce the number of widgets in the sidebar and footer areas.

Thanks! The slowdown is primarily on the dashboard/drafting side of the blog, not so much when viewing the actual blog. Will these tips also affect that management side of things?

It’s to the point that if I have a WP window open, all my other tabs and everything I do online gets bogged down and is almost unusable. Help!?

The slowdown is on the DASHBOARD? That’s bizarre, because the dashboard is very spare. Are you looking at the http or the https version of the dashboard? Have you got Flash up to date? Is there anything on the dashboard that clearly isn’t loading, and just spins and spins?

What browser and version are you using?

To clarify, the slowdown isn’t ONLY on the dashboard; it’s pretty much everywhere once I’m logged in. Including dashboard, drafting an article, viewing another person’s (or my own) blog, etc. I mentioned the dashboard to be sure that it wasn’t only when I was viewing my blog.

I’ll look up the other info.

Are you logged in via http:// or https:// ? https:// can be slow at times since it needs to establish an encrypted connection and all communications between your browser and WordPress, both ways, has to be encrypted.

Try a different brand of browser to see if it is just the one browser that is slow.

Logged in as http, and I’ve experienced this problem using both Firefox (Apple laptop) and IE (Windows PC), whereas just a few months ago, I did not experience a problem using either browser.

However, just tried using Safari, and it works fine. I’m still stumped as to why the problem cropped up in the first place, but this is a solution I’m willing to accept. Thanks!

I’ve had some issues with FF where it slows to a crawl and then ends up going poof and disappears in a cloud of digital dust. Some sites with flash or javascript animation and such will really clog it up. I still use it because of Firebug, but not as my main browser. I pretty much use Safari for everything except things that need Firebug (CSS editing and changing).

I have had some Firefox issues with slow – for some reason one of the video players (Real Player I think) – will load 3 or 4 copies all running at the same time and pulling 20% to 25% of the CPU – usually a close FF and restart fixed things

Make sure you are using the LATEST version of those browsers, and if you’re using compatibility mode, turn it off.
