Why is my custom domain not showing in the address bar?

After initially typing in the custom domain and being directed to the site, it then shows the mywebsitename.wordpress.com, why?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, it would help if you would share the domain name you’re typing in.

Hello again, I see that you’ve got your domain name servers at namecheap pointing to WordPressdotcom, but do you have a plan upgrade to use your custom domain with domain mapping on your WordPressdotcom site?

yes, try ttmseminar.com you will see it goes to http://torahandtimemanagement.wordpress.com/.

If I would have transferred the domain to wordpress, would that have then worked to show the ttmseminar.com in the address bar?

Is there any benefit, price-wise or otherwise, with leaving my domain at namecheap? I’m paying about $9/year for the domain. I only realized I could’ve got a free domain at wordpress later. But right now what to you think is the best/cheapest way to do it?

  • Hi there,

I see your domain is correctly mapped here now, but you have the free address set as your primary domain. That’s why it’s the one showing in your browser. You can update the primary domain at My Site ->Domains.

Many people would advise you to not have your domain and hosting at the same provider, the argument being if one were to go out of business you’d still have some part of your site at the other. Having both at the same provider makes things much simpler and cheaper, though, as you only have to pay one provider for renewals each year, and you only need to log in at one place to manage everything.

If you’d like to transfer your domain to us completely, the cost for that is included in your plan, even with domain mapping already added, and the transfer will also renew your domain for an additional year. However, it looks like you only just registered the domain at NameCheap, so you’ll have to wait a bit until you can transfer it – newly registered domains can only be transferred once they’ve been active for at least 60 days, no matter where you bought it.

You can update the primary domain at My Site ->Domains.

Will doing that have any affect on the availability of the site? We are advertising this website within the next 48 hours.

Domain propagation worldwide can take up to 72 hours but usually it’s faster than that.

But does changing this setting –showing ttmseminar.com vs mysite.wordpress.com in the address bar– need to be propagated? I would think it’s just an internal wordpress.com setting?

  • The change in which domain shows in the browser address bar is instant. The primary domain setting on WordPress.com has nothing to do with name server propagation at your domain provider.

Whether or not it will correctly load your site depends on propagation, though, as a browser will check the name servers to see where it should go to load the site, so if the name servers are not fully updated yet, your domain won’t load for some people.

From my end it looks like propagation is finished, and I see you’ve already switched the primary domain. Your site is loading normally for me and showing the correct domain in my browser address bar.
