Why is my domain still mapped to WordPress/redirecting?

    Hi there,

I’m in the process of setting up a new self-hosted WP installation for faroutmagazine.co.uk for user leethomas23.

Currently the domain is mapped to the farout1.wordpress.com site but I have cancelled this from the wordpress.com side of things and have updated the DNS at the registrar’s end.

I have set up a page at http://faroutmagazine.co.uk which will redirect the user to http://farout1.wordpress.com while I build the site in a /wp directory.

However somehow, the faroutmagazine.co.uk domain brings me to an error page on the WordPress.com site (saying that faroutmagazine.wordpress.com has already been registered) on some browers – on my iPhone, I just get a redirect loop.

Is there something further that needs to be done to disconnect the faroutmagazine.co.uk domain from the WordPress.com account?

    Thanks,

It can take a few hours for changes to take effect –

I have flagged this for the staff to help

I was correctly redirected after I allowed my browser to accept the redirect to farout1.wordpress.com.

The domain mapping needs to be canceled, but it sounds like you did that – and my browser acted like you do have it canceled

Have you tried clearing your caches?

    Hi @auxclass,

    Thanks for your reply.

I thought it might just be a case of taking a while to take effect. I’ve cleared my caches and it does work in Firefox (which is the main browser I use), but Chrome & Safari just give me that WordPress.com error and Safari on iPhone just gives me a redirect loop.

Hoping the staff are able to shed some light on this!

    Thanks again,
    Ross

    You be welcome

depending on the changes (name servers for instance) it can take 24 to 72 hours for changes to reach the far corners of the internet – and since you never visit a site with the exact same route on the internet (load balancing) – you can bump into a router that is not updated yet

Yeah – I do DNS changes etc quite often, but doing one via an existing WordPress.com site is a new experience for me!

It appears to be catching up a little bit though – now working on my iPhone via 3G and after clearing caches again, it’s working in Safari (but still not in Chrome).

I suspect it’ll just take a few more hours to be working across all of them. DNS updates always make me a little anxious, but it does look like things are going to plan now :)

    Thanks again.
