Why is my email header info displaying in comments when I reply to a comment by email? This started
-
When I reply to a comment by email, (hitting reply) the reply displays in WP with all of my email header information included. This was not the case before 3/22/15.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Sorry for the trouble! I see that happened on one of your comments here, where part of the text of the original email was included in your comment:
Could you let me know what email program you use for your email? That will help me investigate this for you. :)
-
I left that comment there for you to see, but I had to edit all of the comments yesterday to take my personal info out.
I use Yahoo mail to reply to comments.
-
Hi there,
Thanks for letting me know. I saved a copy of that comment so you can edit it to remove that extra information if you’d like.
I’m doing some testing on my end to see if I can pinpoint what’s happening here — I’ll let you know as soon as I have more information for you!
-
Any update yet? I am continuing to edit each comment manually because the headers are still displaying in each comment I reply to.
-
Can I get an update on this issue? The problem still exists. I am editing every comment that comes in to remove that email header. Please advise. I can do additional testing if you need me to.
-
Also, I’ve been trying to comment by phone and although it appears that I am able to, the comment reply never displays on the blog. I am using an Android device for that but I sure would like an update on this issue. Even if it’s just, “I’m still working on it.”
-
Still experiencing this problem with email headers displaying in comments when I reply by Yahoo mail. Now, when I reply by phone (Android) my comments do not display at all. I’ve gotten no updates on this issue and the manual maintenance of having to delete all personal info on each comment is a bit of chore. Any update on this?
-
Any updates? Are these messages even being received? I just want to be sure someone is still looking into the issue. The manually editing of each comment coming in is a bit of a drag.
-
Hi there — I’m so sorry for not getting back to you about this sooner! I have a few things I’d like you to try, based on our testing, to see if this resolves the issue for you:
1. When you compose your reply, please delete any text that Yahoo adds above the line that says, “Respond to this comment by replying above this line.” Anything above that line may be published.
2. Make sure Yahoo’s rich text feature is turned on when you’re writing your reply. You can switch between rich text and plain text by clicking the double arrows at the bottom of the email window: https://cloudup.com/cSb9ApnpfIr
3. If that still doesn’t resolve it, please try switching the “Email Delivery Format” in your notifications settings. Right now that’s set to HTML, and you can switch that to Plain Text to remove some of the extra code from the notification email.
Please let me know if this continues to be an issue for you after trying out these steps!
Now, when I reply by phone (Android) my comments do not display at all.
Do those comments end up in the Comments section of your site’s dashboard, for example as pending comments? Or do they not appear anywhere in your dashboard?
-
If I compose my reply from my desktop, and remove what is above the line, the only thing that isn’t displayed in my comment is my personal email address, all the other extra header info is there. Here is a cut and paste of that:
Test A #yiv2602499943 a:hover {color:red;}#yiv2602499943 a {text-decoration:none;color:#0088cc;}#yiv2602499943 a.yiv2602499943primaryactionlink:link, #yiv2602499943 a.yiv2602499943primaryactionlink:visited {background-color:#2585B2;color:#fff;}#yiv2602499943 a.yiv2602499943primaryactionlink:hover, #yiv2602499943 a.yiv2602499943primaryactionlink:active {background-color:#11729E;color:#fff;}#yiv2602499943 WordPress.com | | |
If I change my email notification settings to plain text, the header info still comes in and includes my personal email address. I am cutting and pasting that below.

I am totally unable to reply to a comment by phone and have it show on my blog no matter what I do.
I have literally tried everything. As I said, this happened on 3/22. My email has not changed, settings were not changed, etc. Please continue to research the issue.
-
Thanks for those details. I’m certainly still investigating this — the issue is that Yahoo is adding that extra code at the top of your reply email, so that even when you remove everything above the line that extra text is added to your reply.
I’m trying to track down whether there’s another setting that will help remove that from Yahoo’s end, but I also let our team know so we can see if we’re able to strip that extra code from your reply after you send it and before it’s published.
-
Thank you. Also, I use Yahoo mail but it’s through ATT so the screen for sending email is different than what you included for me to look at. I don’t even know where that code is coming from. When I view source for the page there is no code that matches that. I’d attach a screenshot but I don’t see a way to do that.
The fact that I cannot reply at all from my phone is strange too. I hit reply, type out the message it just defaults to the default comment reply addy and not the one specific for the post. Related? Different issue? Both happened at the same time.
Thanks for continuing to troubleshoot.
-
Ah, thank you for that extra information about the email options looking different. I’m not able to directly test Yahoo mail through ATT, but I did find some details about composing emails in Plain Text or Rich Text here:
http://help.yahoo.com/sbc/tutorials/mmail/mm_compose4.html
Is that how it looks when you’re sending the email replies? If so, can you click the link to switch to Plain Text mode to see if that makes a difference for you?

This sounds like a different issue, but I can also investigate it. When you reply from your phone, are you replying from the same email address or a different one?
-
Same email address is used to reply to comments by phone. (sbcglobal) account that is on file for the blog.
-
Hm, in that case the comment should make it through. You mentioned it goes to the default comment reply address — which address is that? I just want to make sure I have all the details straight while I look into that.

instead of say…(email visible only to moderators and staff) <(email visible only to moderators and staff)>;
-
Well, it won’t let me type it out, removes the info in this forum I will spell it out:
comment-reply at wordpress dot com
-
Thanks. (Staff can always see email addresses in the forums, even if they are redacted for privacy when you look at them. Sorry I forgot to mention that!)
I checked on our end, and nothing has changed with the way those emails are sent. The “from” email address will always be that general comment-reply address, but the “reply-to” email address is the one specific to the comment.
When you hit the reply button in your email client, even on your phone, it should fill in the “reply-to” email address in your email there. If that’s not happening, you may need to check the help information about your phone’s email client to figure out if there’s a setting you can change there.
-
The reply to says BookChatter but the email behind it is (email visible only to moderators and staff) How does the reply know to go to that specific comment then? It never posts to the blog. It goes nowhere.
In the past, it said reply to Book Chatter but embedded was the address specific to the post.
This is all very frustrating. I’ve never had such issues with WP before. I work in IT so I am not completely clueless when it comes to testing stuff out but I have tried everything, no changes on my end and I cannot get this darn thing to work. Both happened on the same day.
