Why is my information public?
-
I wanted to purchase my own domain and discovered that I would have to pay an extra $8 in order to have my address, phone number, and email private? Why in the world would this information be public if people make inquiries in the public database? What does this even mean? This makes me severely uncomfortable and I don’t even want to purchase a domain if I can’t even have my address hidden.

Hi there. I hope you are having a great evening. In the support documents for domain registration, it states: Domain owners are required to share their contact information. The $8.00 Private Registration upgrade will protect your identity and hide your contact information. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
To answer the “why” part: The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) broadly requires that the mailing address, phone number and e-mail address of those owning or administrating a domain name be made publicly available through the “WHOIS” directories.
Here is a blog post from WordPress about private domain registration: https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2010/07/30/private-domain-registrations/
I hope this helps! Have a great evening.
