Why is my IP address AND personal email address showing up in emails you send?
-
can you please tell me why you insist on putting user IP addresses and their emails in every email notification that gets sent out on my behalf? I am sorry but I don’t want my IP address and personal email going out to people I comment on… Or follow… Who are essentially “strangers on the internet”… That allows hackers… and stalkers… to easily invade my privacy… Because you obviously don’t value the pricacy of your users… You need to change that format in emails, or else I am leaving WordPress.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Exactly which emails are you talking about? I know that if you make a comment on someone else’s site, they will get an email (if they have that setting) and will see your IP and Email, and in their comments section on their dashboard they’ll see the IP and Email. They’ll only see the email if they required you to log in, or have a wordpress.COM account. The IP and Email aren’t sent out to random people, and they aren’t sent out to your followers, just to the person running a blog you comment on. If you think a particular person is going to use your IP address to somehow stalk you or hack you, then don’t comment on their site. And if you think they’ll use your email in someway, use a different email account.

Then it seems rather pointless to comment and view other people’s sites so they can see my IP address… Now doesn’t it…? The whole WordPress thing was… We value the privacy of our customer and won’t send out their private information… I’m sorry but an IP address is a lot more private than an email… And there are other ways to go about getting someone’s IP than having a setting that overrides my privacy for not wanting people to know them.
… WordPress is a social site.. Seems very antisocial if you comment and follow someone.. And they get this information sent to them directly… While invading the privacy.. That they deem so important… Seems rather contradictory..

The IP address is valuable in deciding whether comments are genuine, filtering spam, etc. It is common functionality for blog sites to show this to blog authors, it is accessable to any website you browse.
If you are really worried about it then there are many ways of hiding your IP address that work across the internet, not just on WordPress.

Other people can only see your IP if you comment on their site. You don’t get IP information if someone follows you, just for their comments.
It isn’t pointless, since that way you can track your (as in the blog owner) comments you have on your own blog. You can see if a person is trying to pretend to be multiple people (if they have the same IP they likely are) and you can make all their comments held in moderation, or marked as spam if they are causing you issues. And you can then see all the comments made by that particular person.
It’s not at all antisocial to send out the IP about a person who is coming on your site to comment. If you really think people, whose sites you’ve chosen to comment on, are going to somehow maliciously use your IP (which really only gives a rough location, and in plenty of instances they change anyway all the time), then as I said, don’t comment. But 99.9% of people couldn’t care less about a person’s IP address, and most won’t even take notice that they can see them on the comments.
A large number of sites collect IP information, and show it to the administrator of the site. Nearly every site you sign up for an account, will have your IP information, so it’s common practise. It’s to give control to the admin, and give them control of their own site.
If you are still concerned about this, then, your only option is to stop commenting on sites, because wordpress aren’t going to change.
