Why is my most recently blog post missing?

  • Unknown's avatar

Why is one of my blog posts missing? It was entitled, “Defining my Career Roadmap”. I wrote it yesterday, 24/05/2013. What happened? Is your site unsecure against SQL injection, XSS and hacks?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Correction: I wrote it on 23/05/2013. This used to be the URL: http://sm0rgasb0rd.wordpress.com/2013/05/23/defining-my-career-roadmap/. It’s now throwing 404 File Not Found. Can you recover it? I don’t want to have to retype it.

Below is the HUGE! block of categories and tags you assigned to a single post. http://sm0rgasb0rd.wordpress.com/2013/05/23/a-guide-to-going-up-the-career-ladder/

Tags: alienation, burned out, career ladder, computer science, Department of Science and Technology, Diliman Preparatory School, doubts, ego, elementary school, fears, fitting in, follower, geek, high school, inferiority complex, insecurities, leader, leadership, learning, outcast, passion, persuasive skills, Philippine Science High School, philosophy, poverty, scholarship, student council, success, symbiosis, University of the Philippines, valedictorian, WYSIWYG

You are inadvertently tag spamming AKA as spamdexing. The rule of thumb is less is more.

All reasons for non-appearance of posts on Topics pages or Reader can be found here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/topics/#missing-posts The rule of thumb is to assign the least combined number of categories and tags that accurately describe the post content.

As you have assigned a combined total that exceeds 15 Categories/Tags to your posts, you need to edit and delete. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/ After removal note it may take several days for your posts to begin displaying on the WordPress.com Topics pages.

    Hi timethief,

Why wasn’t I warned then that I was past the limit of tagging? I did not know that rule. Would it not be better for a popup to show up and inform that I was already “spamdexing” and prevent me from publishing my post? The blogpost was long and it covered various topics so I listed simply down all the topics. I’m goingto edit right now. But I also want you to know that pulling down one of my blog posts without prior notice was not very customer-friendly. Thanks anyway for your response.

What I posted above also applies to Google and Bing. Their search spiders can detect tag spamming AKA spamdexing.

No one on Staff “pulled down your blog post”. You edited the post and changed the title URL after you published it. That means you created the 404 (page not found) and this is not a security issue at all. I’ll tag his thread for a Staff follow-up and response. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond.

Another suggestion for improvement is to display a running count of tags and categories for each post, I’m now manually counting my tags and categories. Just my two cents. :)

And if you’re talking about the new URL: http://sm0rgasb0rd.wordpress.com/2013/05/24/. I started rewriting my earlier blog post.

Secondly, I still couldn’t find even a copy of my original blog post. Where’s the post with the edited URL with all of the original content?

Thirdly, a chunk of my recent posts have 15+ categories and tags. But they’re not missing.

I am not trying to argue with you or expose a fault on this blogging site. I am asking because I am a web developer and I am trying to “debug” the situation on my own. Yes, I know about spamdexing. But I still believe that preventing me from publishing my blog posts when they exceed the limit and notifying me with a popup somewhere what the problem was is a better workflow.

I am not sure how this support channel works. I thought that I was already communicating with a member of the staff.

WordPress.com has an autosave feature and you may be able to recover an earlier post revision. Go to Posts > All Posts, hover over the title of the post, click Edit and check the Post Revisions module for previous saved versions of the post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-revisions/

If you’re not seeing the Revisions module while on the editor screen, click Screen Options (top right corner of your Admin page) http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ to activate it. Then select the post and page modules to include them. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules Then you ought to be able to go here > Dashboard > All Posts > Posts and locate the post and recover it from post revisions.

If you cannot locate the post for locating and restoring a post revision, and it’s not in your Trash folder http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/ then you will not be able to recover it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/#restoring-from-trash

I am not sure how this support channel works. I thought that I was already communicating with a member of the staff.

This is a peer support forum where Volunteers and Staff work cooperatively to deliver WordPress.com support. Volunteers answer most questions and Staff monitor. When Volunteers cannot provide the required support we flag threads for Staff attention. Please be patient while waiting.

(FWIW I have answered questions here for over 7 years. I was here long before those who are Staff now became Staff. lol :D )

Haha! Wow, good for you then! I apologize if my earlier posts sounded a little too argumentative. My blog is publishing to my Facebook page and linkedin profile. When I clicked the link on linkedin to test my post, it threw a 404 and I got upset because I couldn’t find it. (Overreacted, sorry :D)

I’ll try your suggestions. Thanks for assisting in my dire need to find that missing blog post. More power to you :D

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh shoot… I found it on the trash bin. I do not know how I managed to delete it without my knowledge. Silly me. Again, I apologize if I was on edge. I’m on the job hunt you see and one of my job applications was pointing to this blog and I felt that that post would explain my career roadmap.

I’ll be deleting the extra tags on the other posts. Thanks! :D

Woo hoo! You recovered it. :)

How do I avoid this problem in the future?

    Advice:
Create your posts on the dashboard of your own blog
Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > Add New

Or use an offline blog editor so you always have backups on your own computer http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/

  • Unknown's avatar

I think I found the reason why. I inadvertently clicked the Move to trash link. Another suggestion would be to have a confirmation box before I fully move my post to trash. Another one of my two cents :D

Thanks for all the help! I just followed your blog. I’ll be sure to be mindful of spamdexing this time around. Wow I learned so much from you. :D

You’re welcome and thanks for the follow. :)
