Why is my NEW domain name not what I ordered?

    I want to create http://www.mindfulreading.com. I already own this site over at Weebly, but I want to remove it from Weebly and host it as a .com here at WP.

    So I create a domain name (mindfulreading.com) and then I try to port my Weebly website over. Problem is, as you can see from the blog I’m referencing here, it spells out the ‘dot’ in mindfulreadingdotcom.wordpress.com.

    Except…that’s not a) the domain I wrote (I didn’t spell out the ‘dot’) and b) I thought I was paying up a premium in order to get .wordpress out of the url so that it’s just mindfulreading.com.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    A domain name can only be registered once – you need to domain map your existing name – that will give you mindfulreading.com.

    You can’t have a “.” in a WordPress.COM subdomain – that is why it spells out mindfulreadingdotcom.wordpress.com. –

    You can pick a new blog name if you want – but domain mapping covers up the base blog name (my site is domain mapped to here – click on my name if you want to see what it looks like)

    However mindfulreading.wordpress.com. – is already in use since 2011 so unless you can convince the blogger to give you the blog you will need to pick a different base WordPress.COM URL – you need to have a base blog to map the domain name to it – and as noted above – the base name does not really matter all that much

    Okay, great. I see where I erred. Two questions now:

    1) Where did you see that mindfulreading.wordpress.com has been in use since 2011?

    2) If I’m paying that premium fee to WP, won’t that pull the .wordpress out of the domain and just give me mindfulreading.com? Which is, I assume, how you’ve got your domain as .wordpress-free?

    you need to domain map your existing name – that will give you mindfulreading.com.
