Why is my post not appearing in the reader?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yesterday I posted a piece titled ‘Volt Affection’. Since then, I have tried to find the post in the reader using each of the tags I employed. I’m getting a message that there are no posts with any of these tags.

How might my post have got lost?

    Many thanks.

Howdy! Take a look at this link:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/topics/#missing-posts

It is the best source of information when it comes to questions about Tags in the Reader. It contains the 6 most common reasons your post might not have appeared.

Please give it a read, and let me know if it sheds some light for you. If nothing rings a bell, drop me a note and we’ll look into the issue further. Thanks!

Yes, I misunderstood the advice about tags. I didn’t realise that the limit of 15 referred to categories and tag combined. I still have a question relating to this. I was researching categories and tags, looking at what other people were doing. I found this article in ‘blogs I follow’ in the reader: http://damyantiwrites.wordpress.com/2014/04/11/atozchallenge-flashfiction-j-for-just-when-she-thought-she-was-safe/
I counted a total of 19 categories and tags. Is there something about this article that overrides the need for 15 or fewer categories and tags?

    Thank you for your help

    Hello again!

You don’t want irrelevant content showing up on the topics listings or search, and neither do we. That’s why we limit the number of tags that can be used on a public tag listing. Five to 15 tags (or categories, or a combination of the two) is a good number to add to each of your posts. The more tags you use, the less likely it is that your post will be selected for inclusion in the topics listings.

I do want to address that the link you provided is not using Tags very well. Terms like “blog” and “blogging” are far too general to be useful. Categories can be broad groupings, Tags should be specific and descriptive.

I suspect the duplicate tag/category names are what allows the over-15 tag/category blog to slip past the radar. As you probably read in our documentation, you do not need a duplicate heading as both a tag and a category. Used once, these headings are effective, used more than once, they become overkill and are likely to be overlooked.

Hope this helps. If you want to take a look at one of your posts, to see what the best Tag/Category usage would be, I’m happy to assist. Please let me know!

Thanks for your detailed response, thatrobyn. I’d like to take you up on your offer.

I’ve done quite a lot of reading about the use of categories and tags, and amended all my posts and pages accordingly. Here’s one that I posted a couple of days ago.

    I appreciate your support.

I think these tags are well done. They are specific and they refer to items actually discussed in the post, rather than just mentioned off the cuff. For instance “bleached hair” might not be a great tag for this article. However, Hofmeister Lager is a strong tag, because of the video you’ve included, and because the product name is an important addition to the Post.

I commend you on the homework you’ve done! Best of luck on your very cool site.
