Why is my site being blocked by govt servers because of malware?
-
A couple blog readers have informed me that they can’t get to my blog because their govt server is blocking it (one federal, one local). Is there something I can do to fix that? Or is there something you can do?
Here’s the message a Dept of Interior (DOI) employee got from his TIS person:
“This site was identified as having hosted Malware (probably due to a vulnerability on their site that was compromised). DOI uses USCERT, BlueCoat (one of the largest web content filtering companies), and other reliable sources in determining sites that have been compromised. Once the problem on the website is fixed it can still be a couple of months (or more) before its cleared for use.
There are currently 4 different malware checking services finding problems with this domain (see http://www.urlvoid.com/scan/prairieecologist.com/ ). Until the problem is fixed and it shows clean by all of these no DOI employees will be able to reach the site.
Because DOI relies on 3rd party sources there are no procedures to speed up this process. If the site is still infected you can contact the site owners to let them know of the problem.”

Hi there,
You might ask your visitors to contact their IT person for details. It would seem to be an issue on their side of things.
Don’t hesitate to contact us again if you need anymore help. :-)

Sorry, maybe I wasn’t clear. This request comes from me BECAUSE my readers are contacting their IT person, and they’re being told that there’s an issue on the website with malware. If it was just one IT dept worrying needlessly, I’d ignore it, but I’ve got a lot of readers from the Dept of Interior who are currently being blocked, and at least one local government server is also blocking access to my blog. That doesn’t seem like something on their side of things to me… Especially because both servers started blocking access to my blog at about the same time. Can you explain a bit more what you mean? Is there something specific I can pass along to those IT departments?

There is definitely no malware on your site. Perhaps they are all using the same anti-malware scanner, and thus seeing the same false-positive? We have seen that before.

Ok. Suggestions on what I do? Here’s an additional warning one of my readers is reporting (a non-DOI site):
Website blocked by Trend Micro Worry-Free Business Security

Yeah, we have had trouble with Trend Micro sending false positives before.
As a consumer, I recommend have your IT folks contact Trend Micro to have them re-evaluate the site.
