Why is my website down?

  • Unknown's avatar

It’s http://roberthlevin.wordpress.com/. Inexplicably seems to be down. And I’ve had no page views since April 24, when I added a couple posts.

Error message on Mozilla Firefox reads:
    The page isn’t redirecting properly

Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    From my wife’s computer:

This page has a redirect problem.

So it’s not just a problem with my computer.

    Hi Rob!

It appears as if your domain registration lapsed with your registrar. Here is the public information about your domain:
    http://who.is/whois/roblevin.net

It appears to have expired on February 12, 2015.

If you would like to continue to use that domain, you should get in touch with the registrar.

However, if you’d like, I can remove the domain mapping upgrade from your site (which connects that expired domain from your WordPress.com site), and you can use the free WordPress.com domain name, roberthlevin.wordpress.com/.

In the meantime, I’ve made your WordPress.com site name the primary domain, so you can view your site at http://roberthlevin.wordpress.com/. This can be adjusted if you are able to regain control of that custom domain name.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

    Hi Robyn,

Hmmm… Well the good news is that my website appears to be back up and running. So I’m happy in that respect! If you’re responsible for this, then thank you!

But I’m still rather confused. I clicked on your who.is link and it seems to me that my domain expires on February 21, 2016, and it shouldn’t have ever expired.

And moreover, when I go to http://www.roblevin.net, it still redirects me to roberthlevin.wordpress.com. Your e-mail seemed to indicate that this would not be the case, but it is.

So now everything seems to be up and running, but I don’t know how or why. I’m inclined to just leave well enough alone for now, but I’m happy to hear your thoughts on whether I need to do anything else.

    Many many many thanks!

    Rob

    Hiya Rob,

Yup! The adjustment I made to make roberthlevin.wordpress.com your primary domain is allowing it to work without interruption. Glad it’s functioning for you!

Now, the problem with the domain seems to be that back February, you lost your connection to the WordPress.com name servers. This means that your custom domain is not “pointing” to your website.

If you want to use roblevin.net as the address for your site, you need to get in touch with your domain registrar and ask that they change your name servers to:
    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

Or, you can follow the instructions in the link below to change the name servers yourself:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/change-name-servers/

Once your domain is pointing to the servers here at WordPress.com, we can make roblevin.net your primary domain again. Then, roblevin.net will be what your visitors see when they visit your site.

If you have any other questions about this, please do let me know! You’re almost there!
