I registered on Feb 8. So why is renewal on Jan 9 2016? Only 11 months?

We auto renew domains 30 days before their expiration date. Why? Since letting a domain expire means you may not be able to get it back in the future, we want to ensure that everything is taken care of in advance. We do send out notification emails before charging your card, as we try not to surprise anyone.
You can turn off auto-renew from the “My Upgrades” page:

Well that won’t be necessary as I have discovered that I can’t remove the dates from posts on my front page without forking out for an upgrade. I consider this very dishonest and wish to transfer my site name to another service. It’s not as if the page design is that difficult to make with simple html.
