why is superfish on my site? and how can I remove it?

Superfish was described as malicious adware a few weeks ago, and Microsoft mounted and aggressive campaign to remove it from Lenovo computers. When I look at one of my WordPress blog sites, I find references to superfish in a plugin. Here’s how I found it: I display my blog site, then right-click on View page source. Then I press Ctrl-F and type superfish into the search box. 26 occurrences are flagged in the page source. This is probably not as serious an issue as having superfish installed on my computer, but I want to protect my viewers from potential privacy threats. How can I remove superfish from my site? Thank you.

    Hey there!

Superfish is not on your website, it is an application that lives on your personal computer. Your WordPress.com site is safe and secure, and your followers cannot be impacted by the program installed on your computer.

I’ve found this article for you able how to remove Superfish from your computer:

I hope this helps! If you have any other concerns, drop me a note. Thanks much!

Thanks so much for your response!

However, further investigation shows that no SuperFish files reside on the PC in question, but that the SuperFish references contained in the web pages actually occur within PHP plugins accessed by certain WordPress sites. These include 6 JavaScript files used for menu navigation by the “Genesis” (StudioPress) and “TwentyEleven” (WordPress 3.2) themes. Presumably these SuperFish files and all references to them will be removed when the WordPress sites are updated during their next maintenance cycles.

    Hey there!

    I see the problem :)

The issue isn’t that you have Superfish malware, but that you’re seeing references to another Superfish altogether: a jQuery menu plugin.

The two are entirely separate entities with the same name.

    Some references:
    http://users.tpg.com.au/j_birch/plugins/superfish/
    http://www.home.superfish.com/

You do not have the Superfish malware.

I hope that puts your mind to rest. Your site is safe.

    Thank you.
