why is the like button not usable any more?

  • Unknown's avatar

Since a few days I cannot ‘like’ a post in the blogs I follow.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

So is the issue that you don’t see the Like option (star) at your Reader, or that when you choose the Like option it doesn’t work?

    Thank you for your answer.

The Like button near the bottom of the blog posts is shown as usual. When I press it a small empty window pops up and closes after a second. I have this problem in Firefox in my Linux system as well as in my Windows 7 system. When I try the browser Chrome (which I usually do not use and which I do not know very well) the pop-up window is filled with a login mask for wordpress. When I enter user name and password the like process is executed as usual.

As I do not want to change my browser usage to Chrome I asked for help. Some people think the problem lies within my browser Firefox. First, I do not think so, because I did not change anything but Automattic has changed WordPress some days ago. Second, I do not know what to change in my Firefoxes. I have deleted all the wordpress cookies but it made no difference.

  • Hi there,

When viewing a WordPress.com site, do you see the black admin bar at the top of the page? You should always see that if you’re logged in. If you don’t, it means your browser isn’t tracking your login correctly.

Can you please open this page:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/

Under the Checking Your Browser heading you should see the message:

Great, third party cookies are properly enabled in your browser!

If you don’t see that, please follow the instructions on that page.

If you do see that message, and you do see the black admin bar on the pages where you are unable to like posts, let me know so we can investigate further.

    Thank you for your answer!

The black admin bar is present but third part cookies are disabled. The latter was no concern for me as I thought it would be only an issue if I host my blog in my own domain and not with wordpress.com. The wordpress text starts with the words “When you have your own custom domain for your site”. Therefore I thought I did not need enabling the third party cookies. After enabling third party cookies liking is possible again.

  • I’m glad to hear that.

If I can quickly explain, cookies are specific to a domain. Our cookies that track your login are for the WordPress.com domain. If you’re on any site with a free address, the cookies match the domain, so they are automatically allowed. However, the moment you view a site with a custom domain, the cookie doesn’t match the domain so it becomes a third-party cookie. This applies when viewing any site with a custom domain, not just your own.

The support document can be clearer on this, and thanks for pointing that out. I’ll make sure that it gets updated in this regard.

Thank you again, especially for trying to update the documentation.

I am still a little bit uncomfortable. The blog in which I tried do like a post is “littlebigasia.wordpress.com”. Is it possible that it is a custom domain in spite of its name?

  • Hmm. That site doesn’t have a custom domain, but I know that blocking third party cookies can sometimes cause issues even on free domains. I don’t really know the finer technical intricacies of browser cookies, so can’t explain in more detail than I have already, but if you’re more comfortable blocking third-party cookies for privacy reasons, just make sure that you set “wordpress.com” and “wp.com” as an exception and you should be fine.
