Why is the number of followers button still showing up on Follow Widget?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I do not want people to know how many email followers I have and so I’ve unchecked the box under the “Follow Widget” that says the number of followers will be shown. However, even with this box unticked, the number still shows up. Can you help me address this issue? Many thanks in advance!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hey there Brooke!

    I checked out your site and looked at the Follow button. I did not see a number count. Then, I followed your site to see if this would change, and still did not see the count. Are you, perhaps, seeing the number only because you are the site administrator? If you look at the site without being logged into WordPress.com, do you still see the count?

    If so, send me a screenshot, so I can better understand the issue. You can simply upload the screenshot to your Media Library, like any other image, and I’ll be able to access it from there. Just let me know when there’s something I should look at.

    The page at the following link has some helpful tips for taking screenshots:

    Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

    Hi Robyn,

    Thanks so much for your response! I did log out to make sure it was not just showing because I was the administrator and, indeed, it is still there. I’ve uploaded the screenshot to my media so you can see. It says “join 242 subscribers” in the bottom right hand corner when you click the “follow” plus sign. (Now I’m wondering if that’s different from the widget?)

    Brooke!

    Ah! You are right, that isn’t your Follow blog widget. That is an auto-follow box that opens by default, for non-WordPress.com users to subscribe to your site.

    You have two options:

    1. Hide to pop-up altogether. You can do this at Settings → Reading in your Dashboard. Scroll down to Follow Settings, and de-select “Show follow button to logged out users.” Then, save your changes.
    2. Change the color of the font of your Follower Count, so it is rendered invisible on the gray background of the popup box.

      If you’d like to give this a try, click Appearance → Customize in your site’s Dashboard. Then, click CSS in your right-hand menu. In the CSS Revisions box, please paste the following underneath all existing text:

      p.bit-follow-count {
      color: #464646 ;
      text-shadow: none;
      }

      Then Save your changes.

    That should do the trick! If I can help in any other way, please drop me a line. Cheers :)
