Why is the "portfolio page" template no longer working?

  Using the “photographer” theme, I was able to create a static “gallery” page in which each of my images were displayed as thumbnails then expanded into a full-page carousel when clicked on any of them. I did this by creating a draft page with a title and the page attributes set to “portfolio” under theme (along with the necessary information to nest it within my menu correctly), then inserting media through “add media” then “create gallery,” uploading/selecting images, and clicking “create new gallery” at the bottom. At this stage, the “show preview” would display a functional thumbnail gallery and carousel to publish.

  Now, however, I have repeated each of these steps to no avail–the page displays with a blank white box in both preview and published form. In an effort to problem-solve, I deleted the existing gallery and associated media and reloaded them, but cannot seem to attach them to a static page. I have deleted and re-created the pages several times, though that didn’t help.

  I also tested the gallery/carousel settings on a post and found it worked then–but I could find no way of attaching that post to the static nested page and I do not want the gallery to appear in my “news” section, which is what I use the “post/ blog” applications for.

  It has been an incredibly frustrating couple of days and I would greatly appreciate your help.
