(1) How you are connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com?
The way you connect to the internet (mobile, satellite, DSL, dial-up) and to your blog, and how many proxy server jumps etc. it takes to connect can cause problems. There maybe be problems with your ISP and/or with the proxy servers. Also note that the main dashboard isn’t designed to work with touch devices through the tablet and smartphone browsers.(2) Are you using the secure https:// login?

Note: If you are using an IE9 browser in compatibility mode that makes it render as IE7 and IE7 is not supported.
Have you done any troubleshooting? These are the troubleshooting steps we take whenever any issues like this arise:
a. clearing your browser cache and cookies > http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050b. Using the browser with all extensions or add-ons disabled
c. updating the browser to the latest stable version (not a buggy BETA browser version) http://browsehappy.com/

e. Confirming JavaScript is enabled http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654

g. Resetting your router and modem and rebooting your computer
then logging in using the secure https://h. Trying another browser

Whoa. Isn’t the next step “Check your RAM”?
Given that I lost half an hour’s worth of writing, I’m more inclined to go back to a web log circa 1995…
Is this a common problem? This HDD is two months old and my browser was just restarted… general Firefox release… an odd coincidence that I’d write and write and then find that the post was gone. One of those things.

Do you writing offline. Get everything prepared and checked, save it locally then copy and paste into the Post form.
Just a bit of insurance in case something goes wrong.

If were using the “Add New” on the main page for wordpress.com here http://wordpress.com/#!/post/ then the may be draft is lost and may not be recoverable.
If you created the post in your own dashboard here > http://gordonwagner.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php/ then you may be able to recover an earlier post revision.
Go to Posts > All Posts, hover over the title of the post, click Edit and check the Post Revisions module for previous saved versions of the post.

Then select the post and page modules to include them. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules Then you ought to be able to go here > Dashboard > All Posts > Posts and locate the post and recover it from post revisions.

Advice:
1.Create posts and pages on your own blog’s dashboard.2. When you start a new post, add the title, set it to private and then publish it. When you are done with the post edit it to update it and set it back to publish.
3. The other choice is to get and use an offline blog client such as Windows Live Writer (Windows) or Ecto (Mac) and then everything is saved on your computer and when you are done with the post, you actually publish it directly from the blog client software. And in the meantime, answer those questions. Also, were you writing in the little pop up New Post box that you get by clicking New Post on the Admin bar, or were you writing the post from your Dashboard->New Post page? The former never activates the autosave, the latter generally DOES.

Most of the people reporting this problem have reported back saying the Dashboard form works when others don’t.
But nobody ever seems to read those previous threads.

The thing is, people are still under the impression their Help forms are going to staff, not to the forums. They don’t look around the forums becuase they don’t know they’re being dumped into the forums in the first place.

@gordonwagner, any chance you could provide a little more info? Based on what you posted before, it’s really hard to tell what might have happened.
1. You said you’re using a general Firefox release, can I confirm that means you have version 15.0.1 right now?
2. Were you using Posts → Add New inside your blog dashboard or the New Post option on the WordPress.com home page?
3. Next time you create a new post, can you let us know if the same problem happens again?

I used a New Post window I hadn’t seen before. I know now to stick to only the familiar window. No problems since that time.
