Why is the word "private" appearing before the title of the about part of home

  That’s because you made the page visibility private.

  so if i have the whole blog marked private….what happens if i leave the individual pages marked public? will they stay private under the auspices of the blog…..or am i opening them up to everyone? thank you for your help! :)

  If your blog is private, the “public” pages are only visible to people you’ve invited to see it who have accepted the invitation and signed in to WordPress.com.

  Private pages are only visible to the person who wrote them and the admins.
