Why is there still no follower widget?

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok, so there is a lot of old banter and info that, despite numerous requests, WordPress.com still doesn’t have a follower widget offered. I see lots of questions and answers of “it doesn’t exist,” but no is saying why? Blogger has it (and I hate Blogger…), what’s the deal? Is there a bigger tech reason? Would love to know.

    thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We volunteers answering support questions on the forum do not have any more information about widgets being considered by Staff or not being considered than you do. Have you contacted Staff?

Also what’s the urgency? Every link in a widget to “followers” is an outbound link from your site. Unless you have enough inbound links to balance that flow of Google juice I can’t see the urgency. :)

I would love a followers widget also. When guests come to my blog and see who is following, it makes them want to follow also.

Your content should make people want to follow your blog, not who else is following it.

    Just sayin’…

We’re using a wordpress.com weblog for our church. We are encouraging our peeps to read through the One Year Bible and using the blog to answer people’s questions. For us the positives of having a followers widget would be that the people using the blog would be able to see who else is commenting, and this might make it feel more like an online “community” which is something we were hoping the blog could facilitate. Yes, the blog has comment that makes people want to read it, but a blog is so much more than a place for people to go to read something. That’s what magazines are, and a blog should and can be so much more than that. In my humble opinion, that is…

Best wishes for obtaining the followers widget you so strongly desire.

What value do the followers links have in terms of Google juice and my blog?

The way I understand this is that every little icon in a followers box is linked -> and that means every one is an outbound link (Google juice) flowing out of the blog. Every followers box also has a link to the site that offers the followers widget too.

Some search engine spiders stop indexing when they reach 100 links on any given page on a blog. Most blogs have a sidebar appearing on every page and not just their front page. Wow! All of those links add up!

Think about it. Aside from followers links what do we find in sidebars in terms of links (Google juice)? We find Blogroll links that are also displayed in sidebars on every page -> and every one is an outbound link (Google juice) flowing out of the blog.

Now add to the followers links, blogroll links, every link to every blog directory, social network, social media site, etc (buttons, chiclets and badges) -> and every one is an outbound link (Google juice) flowing out of the blog.

No thanks! I don’t need to brag about how many followers I have.

good point TT. I didn’t even know that, personally, I think that having a follower button is useless. You have your stats, you know where the hits are coming from, etc, why the heck do you need information that’s not pertinent?

It may work for tumblr and twitter, or even blogger, but you have to understand what kind of platform you’re using. WordPress is entirely different then all of those sites and doesn’t need it IMO.

I have a non-monetized wordpress.org blog on a domain that’s being web hosted. If I chose to I could place mybloglog followers widgets and blogged.com followers widgets, and so on and so on … etc. in my sidebars.

Why would I do that? Most of my followers at one social networking or social media site are also my followers on another site, etc. and I can see in my stats where the hits are coming from. The hits bring me no money like pay-per-click advertising does. As that blog is not monetized it’s in essentially the same position as my wordpress.com blog on my own domain – ie. the hits bring me no Google juice and no income.

Only backlinks to my posts transmit Google juice. So how does posting these “bragging” widgets help my blog?

While we are at it: how does spamming the internet with links to every blog post I publish being posted all over the place in every social network and social media benefit my blog in terms of Google juice?

How much time do I spend posting notices (spamming) social media and social network sites with my blog links and retweeting links from other non-monetized blogs? How does the time expenditure compare to the number of backlinks received?

In my case the conversion rate of spamming these sites in terms of the number of backlinks (Google juice) received is very low. I get a few hits from social media, social networks, blog directories, but as those hits do not earn me any income – what actual value do they have, aside from bragging rights?

    I concur!
lol… do you ever get frustrated posting the same stuff. over. and over. and over. and over… ?

(I already know the answer to this question…….)

I dunno, it makes no sense to have a follower button on our wordpress pages, its absolutely unnecessary, with all of the other things we have to keep track of whats going on with our pages and posts and subscriptions and blogroll and clicks and referrers etc etc etc, its a mute point.

I am a minimalist who loathes blog clutter and who employs the pirnciple found here http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2009/01/02/widgets-less-is-more/ My test for placing any widget in my sidebar is how will it benefit my blog, and my blog readers experience of my blog?

When it comes to a followers widget if a reader of my blog clicks an icon in a followers widget – zoom – they are gone from my blog.

The follower whose icon was clicked blog gets a hit and if it’s not a monetized blog that all they get.

If their blog has PPC (pay per click) they get income from every click every visitor makes.

Also when a reader of my blog clicks an icon in a followers widget the site the widget comes from gets a hit. That site will be monetized in most cases so they benefit by receiving income.
