Why is this happening

On the Ubuntu link? It’ll take you to a screen where you pick what version you want (desktop vs server and 32 bit vs 64 bit) and where you are in the world. Then it’ll download the iso of the CD (or maybe it’s a DVD by now). You’ll need a program to burn an iso to disk. You’ll have to Google for that. I used Roxio in Windows (not free) but there’s likely something free out there.
Once you have your CD, you pop it in your optical drive and reboot your computer. If you computer knows to look in the optical drive first (if not you can change boot order in the BIOS) it’ll start the boot process.
I <3 Linux. I’m a happy Fedora user. But Ubuntu (and it’s sister Kubuntu which will look a bit less like an older Mac and more like Windows) is what many people recommend for people starting out because so much of it just works.
If you don’t want to do the LiveCD route, check into VMWare player. That will create a virtual computer in Window. You can then use the VM to do all your risky web work. If the VM gets infested, all you have to do is shut it down and restart it and you’ll be back with a pristine OS.
Google around. You can also try my (sadly neglected lately) Linux blog http://theshellgame.wordpress.com/ for things I’ve learned along the way. I’ve been at it nearly a year and I’m still learning. I just emailed my tutor for help removing some files. Feel free to email me through either of my blogs (the one linked to my user name) or the Linux one if you want more details. I have some screen shots I can dig out if you’d like.
