Why is Video Quality Dependent on Size of Embedded Player?

  • Unknown's avatar

The image quality of my videos goes to pot when I embed a small version of the player.

For example, at http://solacesystems.wordpress.com/video-testing/ the exact same video is embedded twice — once with no width set and a second instance at w=300. The video looks great when the player is unconstrained, even at full screen HD. Forward to 5:00 where you can clearly read the screen capture. The image quality of the second/smaller instance of the video sucks, even when viewed full screen. It’s like the set dimension of the player dramatically reduces the resolution of the video.

Same thing is happening on my self-hosted WP site. At http://solacesystems.com/why-solace-new/performance/high-throughput you can see there I have a few videos I need to embed on one page, so I don’t want them full size, but the reduced size players result in crappy video quality.

Appreciate any assistance, please n thanks!

Note that this happens whether I manually constrain the player with a width setting, or the player naturally shrinks to fit within a smaller container/div.

    Hi there,

Looking at the VideoPress support page, it states:

If the width of your uploaded video is greater than or equal to 640 pixels we will create a “DVD” format video. If the width of your uploaded video is greater than or equal to 1280 pixels we will create an “HD” quality video.

Since you are setting the width at smaller than 640 pixels, the quality of the video isn’t as high.

If you have specific questions of this, please contact our VideoPress support team directly here:

Maybe I wasn’t clear, because your response is off target. The text you pasted from the support page indicates that quality of video that VideoPress creates is contingent on the resolution of the source video, whereas my problem is with player size affecting the display of videos that have already been “created” at HD quality.

My problem is that the same exact uploaded video is being presented with varying quality depending on the size of the player, which should not matter.

I have submitted this same ticket to VideoPress support, thanks for the link.

I see. I’ll let the VideoPress support team handle this as they would have more background with this.

    Thanks!
