Why isn't it my home page which comes up in a search?

When I Google “Suffolk Organic Gardeners” our website comes up (which is great!), but instead of the homepage, it is an archived page,
    suffolkorganicgardeners.wordpress.com/author/suffolkorganicgardeners/ which is listed.

I have been asked “to fix this” and have made no progress so would be very grateful for some advice.

I cannot even see this page from the admin side, although as a user you can click on the url and it takes you to a page which looks like it belongs on our website and from which you can navigate to the Home page, as it has a functioning menu bar. This is very disconcerting.
I am new to WordPress and website admin and feel I must be missing something obvious. Is this page something generated automatically by WordPress? And can I remove it or at least lower its search ranking so that the home page “wins out”?
    Thanks.

Nothing is broken. You chose to create a PAGE based structure.

A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication.

A website is a page based site designed to operate as a one way means of communication ie. a noticeboard.

blog = site with post based structure being continually updated – attractive to search engines

website = site with page based structure – rarely updated – unattractive to search engines

Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based, but let’s put that aside for the moment. Understand that what attracts search engines is unique content the cannot be found anywhere else on the internet and that content is found in POST based structures. Thank you for your prompt response and link both of which are very helpful.

I am still puzzled that a page which I cannot see on my dashboard is being returned in the search. The page (suffolkorganicgardeners.wordpress.com/author/suffolkorganicgardeners/) appears to part of our site if you enter this url and yet it is not on my dashboard. If it is a cached former page, why is it still linked to the current page?

That appears to be an author link to me.
