Why isn't my custom domain resolving

OK, I’m a geek…I get this stuff. But several hours ago updated the nameservers for my blog domain so they would point to WordPress and the domain is still not resolving. Any ideas?

The nameservers appear to be set up correctly for retiredgeek.net.
retiredgeek.net is set as the primary domain for theretiredgeek.wordpress.com and will appear in the address bar when you visit the site.After you make the domain mapping purchase here > Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades and do the set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient. Note that it’s quite common for your own ISP to be last one to flush their DNS caches.

I understand propagation…that’s not the problem. Using a global propagation checker online I can see it’s already propagated. I think the problem is when I setup the blog initially there was the option to put it online and let search engines find it, or online without search engines finding it, or keeping it completely private. I selected the latter and I can’t find in WordPress dashboard where to change this.

That is not the problem
To set visibility go the the dashboard at: theretiredgeek.wordpress.com

Remember that you will work on the base Dashboard for your site theretiredgeek.wordpress.com – not retiredgeek.net. – only those that visit your site will see the retiredgeek.net.

Yup…understood that. The only thing in this regard I didn’t see was an easy way to get back to the page (in actual format) after I edit it. The roundabout way I found was “My Blogs|Change Appearance” and then just click on it. Surely there’s an easier way to get there that I’m just missing.

I’m still concerned that something is affecting this besides simply not propagating yet. When I go to http://www.whatsmydns.net/ and plug in my A, CNAME, MX, or NS records it samples a bunch a servers worldwide and shows nothing but red x’s everywhere. If there were even a few green check marks I’d buy into propagation being the issue…but I just don’t think it is.
In the last week I’ve taken two domains live from the same DNS host and they both propagated worldwide in less than four hours…and several of the servers on this very same DNS propagation checker showed propagation after only 30 minutes. It’s been six hours and I haven’t seen one sign of propagation yet…and for using this tool my own ISP doesn’t even factor in.
Any other thoughts? Thanks.

In one of hte posts above someone mentioned the domain mapping upgrade. Did you purchase it? It is necessary for this to work.

@raincoaster: That was the first thing I did…bought the $13 upgrade to map “theretiredgeek.wordpress.com” to “retiredgeek.net”. I have the PayPal receipt.

Is there any sort of forward or other DNS stuff on your domain (CNAME or ANAME) at your registrar? I see it try to go to http://www.retiredgeek.net and then it changes to retiredgeek.net and then comes up with the error.

Also, look at #3 on the map an existing domain support page and make sure you have selected your domain name as “primary.”

It looks like your domain is not pointing to WordPress.com name servers yet. Please go to your domain registrar’s site and log into the control panel. You will need to update the name servers as below:
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COMOtherwise please contact your domain registrar (Tucows) to set the these name server records for your.

@kardotim: The correct three name servers for wordpress.com were changed as soon as I setup this blog and I’ve called Tucows and they verify there is nothing wrong with them. I’ve probably changed 300 name servers in my life…I assure you they’re in my DNS record correctly.
