Why isn't my featured image showing on my homepage
-
My featured image is not showing up on my pages although it is set as featured image. Why is this?. What size does it need to be?
Also – how do I get text into the secondary page of my portfolio item. I have added just one portfolio item so far and need to put a description into the page that comes up when the portfolio item ( Executive selection) is clicked.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Howie!
It looks like the image you currently have set is a bit small. I would try to set a featured image more in the 1200×800 range at least. Can you give that a try? Here’s a pretty awesome website that compiles a lot of royalty free stock photos:
Regarding the portfolio, you should be able to add content by entering it on the individual portfolio item. In this case, that would be here:

Can you give that a try?

I have set an image at 1200 x 800 – but still doesn’t show on the homepage.
Also – where can I input images to use as a slider on the homepage?
-
Hi Howie,
I apologize for the oversight. If the page is set as the home page for your site, the featured image will not be shown. For the home page, the theme uses either a YouTube video or an image slider based on a featured tag.
The theme documentation explains this a bit more (specifically under “Customize the Background”):
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/ladder/support/
So, for the front page, you can either specify a YouTube URL or setup some featured posts.
Can you give the support doc section a read and let me know if you have any additional questions?
-
OK – that explains it Jeremy. Can you tell me why the featured image is oversized and dark on the other pages – can it not display an image as it is?
-
Hey Howie,
The darkness is the result of an overlay. The goal is to make sure the content is readable even with the background image. You should be able to remove it with the following CSS:
#overlay {
display: none;
}Just input that under Appearance -> Customize -> CSS. Also, just for future reference, we have a forum devoted to CSS customizations here:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization
In case you’re interested to learn a bit more, we have some information and resources here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/
Regarding the image being oversized, can you explain a bit more about what you mean? The image should be automatically stretched to fit the entire content size.
-
OK Jeremy – yes I understand the overlay thanks. The image (for example on Contact Us is being cropped – is that because the height has been stretched to fit? What is the ideal size for that background pic?
Lastly – can I get rid of that line bottom right of the page – BLOG AT WORDPRESS.COM. THE LADDER THEME as I am on a premium theme? If so where is it? Many thanks for your help
-
Hey Howie,
It looks like all of the images on the Ladder theme will be zoomed in just a bit. For example, check out the demo here:
http://ladderdemo.wordpress.com/2014/04/27/quisque-venenatis/
You can compare that to the actual photo here:
You’ll see that a few of the bottom petals are missing due to the zoom. It looks like the theme automatically takes a 670 px wide version of the images and adjusts it to fix the screen. This is likely to prevent various image sizes from looking different from one another. By picking a standard size (670px wide) to use, every image looks similar. I would just keep using images that are at least 1200×800.
Lastly – can I get rid of that line bottom right of the page – BLOG AT WORDPRESS.COM. THE LADDER THEME as I am on a premium theme? If so where is it?
That attribution is actually required by our Terms of Service here (specifically #11):
I’m afraid you will not be able to remove it.
