why isn't the featured image featured in the reader?

I set a featured image of what I wanted people to see when my blog shows up in the reader. I also created a gallery.
Unfortunately, whenever I create a gallery, the gallery images show up in the reader instead of the featured image.
I have since deleted the gallery in hopes that the featured image will be featured like I want it to.
Is there a way to have a gallery in a blog post without it replacing the featured image in the reader?The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello there Tara!
It is generally the first image in your post that displays in the Reader.
Give this a try, and tell me if adjusting the order in which your image and gallery display in your posts impacts the manner in which it’s shown in the Reader.
If you’re still having trouble after my suggestion above, please leave the gallery/images as-is in your post. Then, send me a link to the post so I can troubleshoot the issue further for you.

Thanks for your reply! The first image in my post was the featured image and the gallery was later on. Because the gallery was showing up in the reader I have since removed it from my last post. Once I removed the gallery the featured image was shown.
Is there a way of finding out why the gallery images were being featured even if I’ve since removed the gallery? -

I’ve tested it on our end, and I cannot recreate the problem you reported! So, I’m not entirely sure what made your issue occur. I know that isn’t super helpful, since you want to avoid the problem in the future. However, I can keep this thread open, and you’re welcome to get back to me at anytime if this re-occurs. I don’t want you to be inconvenienced again!
You can simply move forward and the next time your create a similar post, let me know. I’ll also follow your site so I receive notifications of new posts in my personal Reader. That way, I can keep an eye on things with you.

The issue appears to be arising because your main (first) image isn’t large enough to take precedence over the gallery.
Can you please insert the image as “full size” or at least 600 px width when you add it to a post? Even if you add the image as full size, it will be constricted to the actual column size for your theme. It won’t look extra large.
That should do the trick. Then, the image should be what the Reader grabs, instead of your gallery.
This will have to be done on a new post. Changing your previously published posts will not change the way they look in the Reader.
