Why lots of views on one old post?

This is not a problem per se, but I am curious as to why every once in a while I will have 3x or 5x my normal views, and they are always on the same post . . . something I wrote about Mount Rushmore.

For instance, sometime in the last two hours I had 117 views on my post from two years ago. That alone is roughly 3x my total normal views for my blog.

It would not bother me, except it’s happened before . . . 70 views on March 26, and there was one time a few months ago where I had about 150 views.

What is strange is that each time it’s all during a short period of time, and that same post has no views for weeks before or after.

So, to recap . . . on this one particular post (the same each time), during a short period of time (a few hours on a given day) I get lots of views, and then nothing on that post for weeks, until all of a sudden, again lots of views.

Any ideas? Is anyone else experiencing similar behavior for any of your posts?

I should also mention . . . It’s always from Yahoo.com searches for “Mount Rushmore”.

Except, when I do search on Yahoo for “Mount Rushmore”, my post is not listed anywhere I can find.

    Hi there,

I just went and took a look at your statistics, and the traffic which you’ve gotten has actually come from Yahoo Image Searches, not just Yahoo Search. Google has recently instituted practices that makes sure that any image searches from its site results in few if any views on statistics. Yahoo has not yet implemented any such changes, so it someone searches for a term that matches an image on your site, then that can result in a view (but not a visit, because nobody visited your site) showing up in your stats.

It may be that there were a lot of hits that fit those terms, or one person went back over and over again (or even just used that term or link and it got hit several times). In either case, that appears to be what happened!

Hmmm . . . and yet, I did a number of Yahoo image searches in an attempt to duplicate the problem . . . no change to my totals. Further, no photos or links to my blog in the first 6-7 pages from the searches.

And it seems incredible “mount rushmore” is only searched once every two-three weeks . . .

Like I said, not a big deal, but the explanation does not make much sense without knowing more about the mechanism doing this.

    But thanks for your response.
