Why must I get a domain mapping??

  I was trying to register a domain on my wordpress.com site,
  and then realize I have to pay for the Domain Mapping as well.
  Why must I pay an extra $12 on each domain I want to register?
  Can’t the domain register function without this mapping thing?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  No, the registered domain can’t connect to the blog without the mapping. You need BOTH. Otherwise you own the domain but it goes nowhere.
