Why no “custom header image function” on own-server-version?
-
No themes I have downloaded offer me the function to import an own picture as a header image.
Do I have to install any plugin for that? -
Wrong forum mate, you need to ask over at wordpress.org.
That said the themese you get for there need to be modified off site. In other words you need to alter the HTML and CSS yourself, then upload the theme to the theme folder.
WordPress, com takes the difficulty out of this for the few themes that have custome headers

You want to read the thread marked “Seven things to know before posting in the forum”. Also:

Searching first would be even better as we discussed this just yesterday.
Do note that since you have access to the theme files, you can simply swap out the image file with the one that you want.

Yes it is just a case of uploading the new graphic using ftp or maybe the file manager in cpanel.

No. AFAIK, you don’t have to install any plugin for that.
You just need to go to WordPress.org Support Forum :)
