Why not allow automattic subdomains for websites?

    Hello,

I’ve become interested in using the woocommerce plugin, but I do not like the garbled look at the subdomain that I would be offered (‘wpcomstaging’). Why does not Automattic just allow websites to use automattic as the subdomain?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @dennisfrancisblewett, thanks for the feedback!

The simple answer is that free sites always have a free .wordpress.com subdomain under them, and any sites that have extra plugins and themes installed use the other type of subdomain for that different infrastructure.

Will you be adding a custom domain to your site, such as dennisfrancisblewett.com? I ask because as soon as you connect a custom domain, the subdomain won’t be visible to your users. The business plan users tend to use a custom domain every time, and only use the staging address if they’re setting up a new site while keeping the old one live.

If you’ll be adding a custom domain, you should be all set at that point, but if you won’t be adding one, let us know a bit more about your use case and we’ll help how we can.
