Why not use the full TinyMCE?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Just got set up, bought the CSS upgrade and found out afterwards that there are a lot of functions missing in the visual editor :( This is essential for us since we have editors that don’t know html. Maybe I just couldn’t find where to change this but if case it’s not possible today:

    TinyMCE does support all you could dream off (see http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/examples/full.php), it would be nice if you guys could at least add a checkbox to the settings for people who wanna use the full feature set (i think its just one line of code to be changed so it should be implementable swiftly). Thanks in advance :)

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    What else do you want? Some of the facilities such as adding new layers would not fit with blog functionality. Others would require substantial changes to implement,

    Staff I suspect has their reasons for not including the full TinyMCE editor. What those reasons are, I have no idea, just wild speculation.

    Thx for the tip thesacredpath, the things I miss the most are font family / size and table, I would even be willing to pay for this with an upgrade *wink* *wink* to get the full options (minus the ones that are not possible / hard implement)

    This has been discussed before to no avail. I have preciously requested the font, backgound image, and HTML table features, etc. be installed in the TinyMCE editor on wordpress.com blogs and was met with stony silence form Staff or with we’ll put it on the list type replies. The bottom line is that annually renewable CSS ugrades bring in $ to wordpress.com so those features are not be made available to us.

    I see, well then an option could be to include this features in the CSS upgrade if folks around here are so worried about a profit drop….

    Two versions of TinyMCE for wordpress.com blogs – I doubt it, but have you suggested that to Staff? I’m asking because we are only Volunteers here. We do not make decisions – only Staff do. Here’s the link > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

    WordPress has to pay for all their datacenters, servers and bandwidth. They don’t have a sugar daddy like Blogger does. Blogger doesn’t even make a tiny blip in Google’s costs which is why everything there is free. If it had to pay its own way, it would be charging for stuff as well.

    Why not self-host a blog and then you can put the full editor in (TinyMCE advanced plugin) and then you have it all with no paid upgrades.

    What you might find though is that the full editor brings with it more headaches than you are willing to stand. I’ve actually removed it from 6 client blogs and put them back on the basic wordpress editor because I was tired of having to go in and fix all the errors and problems.

    Just sayin’…

    @TSP
    Thanks for sharing your experience. I believe Tess has mentioned similar problems as well.
