why only a stupid blog, and not a website?
-
I signed up for a trial of WordPress to see if I could actually work up a website I could live with, or if I’d have to go back and brush up on Dreamweaver. Fine; I signed up; and was plopped with no escape route into a blog creator, in which I couldn’t possibly have less interest; but with no alternative path indicated. Is there actually some way I can work on a website here, or should I just forget it? So far, it’s been nothing but irritating…

Hi Sean,
Please note that the words site and blog are used interchangeably here on WordPress.com. There isn’t a separate sign up or theme for a site as opposed to a blog. They’d be exactly the same.
I’m assuming the differences you want between a blog and site would be that you’d want a custom menu and static pages like a Home page, Contact Page, etc. And then you may want a separate page for all your posts (blog type posts).
In order to do this you can create a Home Page by going to Pages > Add new in your Dashboard. This is a static page that would be the page your readers view the minute they visit your site. After you published that, create another page titled Blog, Posts or whatever you want if you want a separate page with all your posts. Leave this page empty, but publish it.
Then go to Settings > Reading in your Dashboard. At the top where it says Front Page displays: select a static page and set the the Home page you just created as your Front Page, and the Blog or Posts page as your Posts page. If you don’t want a Posts page, you can leave that blank.
Finally, if you want to create a Custom Menu you can by going to Appearance > Menus in your Dashboard. Please view the link for further instructions.
Let me know if you have any questions with this!

Grace,
Many thanks for your reply, but if there’s no difference here between a blog and a site, I may already be in the wrong place.
In any case, the problem is that when I log in, there are no alternatives of the sort you list available to me in what comes up; no “Pages>”, no “Dashboard”, simply a blog page called “Reader” and a “My Site” page which is nothing obvious to me but stats. No doubt there must be some way to escape from this to some useful alternatives, but I haven’t found it. -
Hi!
When you login to WordPress.com, you’ll be sent directly to the WordPress.com homepage. There are two ways to edit/add items to your site. First, you can click “My Sites” in the top left-hand corner. From there, you should see Pages, Posts, etc.
Alternatively, you can bookmark this URL:
https://seanthackreyphotographs.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
That will take you directly to your site’s backend so you can add/edit content.
Can you give those two items a try?
If you’re looking to setup a “website” with static content versus a “blog” with constantly updated content, this might tutorial is likely right up your alley:
https://createyour.wordpress.com/
It’s aimed at businesses that want a website instead of a blog.

Jeremy,
You do address my problem directly, and I thank you for it; I’ll run through your suggested steps this evening.
