Why on't my website point to the new domain ?

  Yeah, you can try adding those as they have listed via your Custom DNS panel: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/

  I’m skeptical as to whether their A record changes are necessary.

  Also, please note that we can’t support all email configurations, so you may need to try Google Apps for Domains instead: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/google-apps-email/
