Why so many adresses to my blog ?
-
http://stenbocken.wordpress.com is composed of one Post and on Page
It is public.
But the adress only shows the Post, i e not the Page
Klicking on Get Shortlink produces some gibberish like
http://wp.me/PHm9A-2r for the page
http://wp.me/pHm9A-1 for the post
Both the page and the post have of course Permalinks. What is the use of the gibberish link ?
What is the adress of the blog (public) which shows the page and post be combined ?
Or are they always separated ?The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
The page and the post are separate entities so each have a separate URL.
The home page is http://stenbocken.wordpress.com (which will show a list of your latest posts (reverse chronological order) when you actually have posts (plural).
Each post has its own separate permalink page which is where comments are show and can be made. Also, if you use the “read more” link on the posts, then the rest of the post shows up on the post permalink page.
-
The short links are just to give you a way to shorten the links for places like twitter where you only get 140 characters. If your permalink was 145 characters long you could not post it on twitter.
-
OK but the home page is only listing the posts. What about the page ? what adress does it have ? it is not the home page ?
-
What page? I don’t see a page. If you created a page, then for that to be visible so that people can get to it you have to put the “pages” widget into your sidebar.
-
http://wp.me/PHm9A-2r is a page, right ?
But this adress is not possible to memmorize
So I wonder if it has a web adress
Or if the only way to publish it is with a page widget
But now it has no such widget yet visibility is set “public”
This is an example on how mess WP can be, for every single detail a lot of know-how is requested -
Some themes have navigation bars and others do not. The Journalist is one of the themes which does not have a navigation menu. Because it does not, you must use a pages widget in order for your readers to find your pages.
There might be some other news you won’t be happy about:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/copying-a-theme-with-css-the-journalist-13?replies=6#post-513599Bad news timethief: I recently set up a blog for a friend and found out that Journalist 1.3, Sandbox 0.6 and Sandbox 1.1 are no longer available to new blogs. Just like Pressrow.
Apparently people can continue to use the theme, but new users won’t be able to. I suspect that if you were to experiment with another theme, say one which has a navigation bar, you might not be able to return to Journalist.

I am quite dissappointed on WP. It simply too tricky and I don’t see any point with it, it makes me annoyed. I am now experimenting with JOOMLA. This is a competitor to WP I think. Are there other competitors ?

I know there are those who spend time on trying out new programs that they find searching on Google.
I am not one of them
I want to see recommended by people who have tested it or some computer magazine. -
Hey Stenbocken,
Whichever platform you choose, you will have to spend some time getting familiar with it. Whether it is wordpress or whatever.
Your issue with the URL is totally unfounded. There is absolutely no requirement to use those short URLs and there is an explanation of why they might be used above.
Not to be difficult, but the issue here is simply your understanding of the features. There are lots of them, it can be daunting for sure. Again, whichever platform you choose you will need to spend some quality time learning your way around.
If you have more questions I would be happy to try to help, I am a new user too so I know what you are going through.

@stenbocken
I selected those articles because one was a survey of readers’ choices, and the others were comparisons that seemed to illustrate both the positives and negatives in reviewing each format. My personal recommendation would be WordPress.com. But you can certainly disagree that it is best for you.

Welcome to blogging at WordPress.com!
We volunteers try to make these forums a friendly and helpful place and I hope you will enjoy your time here. Both finding information, and answering questions.
When I was a newbie the forums were very useful for learning all sorts of tips and tricks! -
I develop sites with Joomla, and I can tell you from experience that Joomla, out of the box is not very good for blogging. You have to add modules to it to give you the features you need, and many of those are not free. I set up a site with blog on Joomla for a client, and then cost of the blog component was nearly $150 (to give all the normal blog features).
Joomla has a much steeper learning curve than WordPress. I use both.
The URLs like http://wp.me/PHm9A-2r are to be used at places like Facebook and Twitter. You typically don’t use them anywhere else. Twitter has a 140 character limit and some full URLs can easily eat up all those characters. The URL for this forum page is over 70 characters.
Upgrading wordpress when needed is a snap as is updating plugins in wordpress because wordpress provides automatic ways to do that. Joomla does not. With Joomla upgrading add-ons and such is a completely FTP manual thing.
