why so many views & so few visitors?
-
On my stats page, I have noticed that for the past week or so I have had thousands of views of my “about” page but only a handful of visitors. How am I having so many views but so few visitors? It doesn’t make sense to me. Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Wow. That’s some spike in someone refreshing your page a ton, eh? We’re digging into it as that’s very odd to us too.
I appreciate your patience as we figure out if there’s an explanation on our end to account for this.

Hi,
We’re still digging into to see if we can provide any additional information. These were all hits that we received—not an error in our system—from one particular IP address that really skewed your stats.
I’ll let you know if we’re able to determine anything additional.

Hmm, so one IP address means one computer, right? That kind of creeps me out. I am still getting thousands of views of my about page every day but only 1-2 visitors. It’s kind of scaring me.

I hope you had a good weekend.
Our logs look “normal” as far as the hits are concerned. It could be one computer or one computer network (e.g. a company might have everyone behind a single IP address or something like that).
The hits are coming so quickly though that I don’t think an individual is sitting there refreshing the browser or something like that. Could be something as innocent as someone has a weird setup on their browser that constantly pings for updates so they always see the latest version of a website and left your site open on their computer for awhile now. In short, my hypothesis is a technical glitch on someone’s computer is inflating the stats.
It’s odd, for sure, but I’m afraid there’s not a technical reason on our end for the stats to look like that.

Greetings again,
We dove through the stats a bit further and have a revised hypothesis. The IP address of the incoming hits is an IP address that you use/used (comments that you submitted from that IP address: https://athicketofmusings.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?s=75.177.155.193 )
Could you check your add-ons/extensions in Firefox to see if you have one that may be pinging the site? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/disable-or-remove-add-ons
Cheers!

Ok, well, that is very strange indeed but it does make me feel a lot better! I actually use Google Chrome, not Firefox. What does ping even mean? Thanks again for the help!

Ah, I mentioned Firefox as that’s the browser being reported as the view coming from. It appears to be a Time Warner Cable connection in Raleigh, NC.
One of the ideas we’re kicking around here is if it isn’t your normal connection, perhaps it is a computer at a relative/friend’s house that you may have used before and that individual’s browser is what’s hitting our server.
Cheers!

Hmm, I do have a Time Warner Cable connection in Raleigh, NC. But I rarely ever use Firefox. Interesting. Well, it makes me feel a lot better (albeit a little silly) to know that the hits are probably coming from my own computer. Thanks!

It also could be that I got a new computer recently & maybe the old one is still up somehow (even though it is actually quite dead by now)?
-
:-) I’d rather have a rogue Firefox browser than a mysterious third-party checking my site too!
I’d check your Firefox extensions to see if anything could be the cause. If Firefox is running in the background, the extension may still be active. If you haven’t restarted your computer, that may kill the process triggering all of the hits.
Cheers!
