why so much spam lately?

I’ve been using WordPress for about 3 years and love it, but have never gotten nearly as much spam as I have in the past few weeks or so. I’ve been getting them almost every day lately and got about 6 of them today.
They are disguised as Comments to specific posts, but are full of info about various kinds of products for sale. Although some of them make no sense whatsoever. I mark them as spam, and many are already noted as spam by WordPress. Just wondering why so much of this all of a sudden, and can any thing be done about it?

Hi there,
As Rachel mentioned in your last support thread, part of this is because spammers are continually trying new approaches and looking for ways to get their comments posted.
In addition to the recommendations she gave, I’d also suggest you look at the tips linked here:

In particular, using the comment moderation and comment blacklist settings on your blog can help keep spam in the spam queue and out of sight. :)
