Why the black box?
-
Okay, my photo is 128 x 96, so it’s not too big. It doesn’t look like it has a transparent background–it came from Photo Booth. It’s a jpg. But when I upload the photo, it says crop your photo and the cropping box is not there, just the little photo. If I select crop anyway, it goes to the next page saying the upload was successful and I should (should is the operative word here) start seeing my avatar soon. And there are three solid black boxes. The photo is of a woman’s face (me).
I’m using Firefox, but why would that have anything to do with it? I tried logging out, clearing the cache and uploading again. Same result.
Some help would be greatly appreciated!

I think you’ll find this is the problem:

Hmmm, I don’t have a transparent background, though. It’s a jpg totally filled with color. Thanks anyway.

@bendylady
How about trying another image of exact size 128 x 128 just to see if it works? That would help narrow down whether this is an image specific problem or not. -

I couldn’t figure out how to upload the image to wp.com because I don’t have a blog, just a username. So I put it here: http://s56.photobucket.com/albums/g193/coloradobird/Avatar/

The picture is too small. It has a height of less than 128 pixels. I have a feeling that that is the issue. When you crop, are you sure you’r not leaving in any of the white space at the top and bottom?
edit: I did try it here in the forums just to see what occurs. I can’t clear out my cache as I’m logged in on another site trying to code something. It’s an overexposed shot of a white female.
reedit: It does show up for me on my profile page using IE6 but I made sure not to include any of the white background at the top and bottom when I cropped it.

I had a similar problem and found that it’s best to upload a pic of the exact specified size. Good luck. :)

Decided to try in Safari in case it was a Firefox problem and it worked without a hitch. Same exact photo. Tried Firefox first, didn’t work, tried Safari a minute later, it did work.
Thanks for the help!
