Why does @WordPress.com suddenly show “The WordPress bookmarklet was deprecated. Please delete it from your web browser.” w/o any warning?
This bookmarklet used to work fine until a few hours ago on my wiert.wordpress.com site.
I’ve seen no email notification it would stop working. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Howdy Craig,
You can read all about the bookmarks in Chrome, here: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/188842?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en
With that being said, there is a possibility that we might just decide to bring it back, you can track the issue here: https://github.com/WordPress/press-this/issues/15
Let us know if you need help with anything else.
Thanks!

Happiness Engineer | Automattic Inc.Thanks for the reply. Suyogya, but it still doesn’t help me fix the problem,. I know about bookmarks in Chrome and how to edit and delete. I don’t have any WordPress blogs in my bookmarks. I spent a whole day yesterday trying to fix the problem (as it applies to ALL my blogs), but still don’t know HOW, so am very disappointed the system was changed without warning.
I am considering not using WordPress until this problem is sorted out as I use the press feature all the time. And I cant recommend it any longer as I do.

Hi there,
The WordPress bookmarklet was deprecated. Please delete it from your web browser when I try to press to http://www.craigsbooks.wordpress.com (my main site).
That is a message from your internet browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, etc.) that is indicating that your bookmark is no longer valid. The best thing to do is to delete the bookmark, manually visit your site craigsbooks.wordpress.com and then readd the bookmark.
I hope this helps! If you have any other questions we can help you with, please don’t hesitate to ask. We’re here to help!

Hello!
what is a bookmarklet? This is ALL I’m trying to fix (from yesterday) , but after numerous emails yesterday I’ve got nowhere

Hi there,
The bookmarklet via wp-admin no longer functions — where you would click on a bookmark in your browser and it would grab stuff off of a site.
However, the editor itself when hitting wp-admin/press-this.php itself will keep working. You can still add a URL to your site similarly to how you did it with the old bookmarklet. To do this, add /wp-admin/press-this.php to the end of your site’s address. For example, to access the Press This feature on your (X) site, go to this address:
https://yoursite.blog/wp-admin/press-this.php
Paste the URL of the site you wish to press in the box at the top that says “Enter a URL to scan”. It will then pull in the contents as your old Press This button did before.
Also, the new dashboard has a Press This feature you can use. It’s not as robust (you can’t copy text and have it included in the new post) — but it’s workable. You can find it at Settings > Writing.
Hope this helps. Thanks!

Now to learn and practice right-clicking at https://wordpress.com/settings/writing/craigsbooks.wordpress.com
and how to put on bookmarks barPress This is a bookmarklet: a little app that runs in your browser and lets you grab bits of the web.
Use Press This to clip text, images and videos from any web page. Then edit and add more straight from Press This before you save or publish it in a post on your site.
Drag-and-drop the following link to your bookmarks bar or right click it and add it to your favorites for a posting shortcut.
Press This
Thanks again, Darnell and best wishes from the First City to see the light -
-
TO PRESS just add wp-admin/press-this.php to your website adress in the browser
Simple, “easy peasy”. Thanks so much Darnelle

But why would you get rid of a working bookmarklet? The php link is not really a bookmarklet, and it isn’t functioning well. The text it copies, does not retain line breaks and such, and we have to open it in a new tab first. That defeats the purpose of a bookmarklet.
It all seems arbitrarily done. Doesn’t look fair.
-
We did not get rid of it. The WordPress.org community removed the feature from the core WordPress software. As we use that same software on WordPress.com, any change there will also affect WordPress.com.
The Calypso version of the bookmarklet still works, as that is not part of Core WordPress.
-
The standard Press This is very slow and unreliable for me. Is there anything that can be done about this?
-
What do you mean by the “standard Press This”? Are you referring to the Calypso bookmarklet found at My Site ->Settings or the sharing button? On which site are you using it? And in what way is it unreliable? We need details if we’re to investigate a potential issue with the feature.
Clicking the Press This button creates a new post in the My Sites editor in a new browser window, and it should take no longer than it normally does when loading the editor.
-
1) The Calypso bookmarklet
2) It is very slow, sometimes taking over a minute to load
3) Saving does not always work, usually need 2-3 tries
4) The title is populated way after the body of the post, if at all
5) It is much slower than the old bookmarklet
6) The site is avantmusicnews.wordpress.com
