Why "The WordPress bookmarklet was deprecated. Please delete it…"

  • if you were to be removing the classic dashboard/editor, and if you were to be removing its related bookmarklet, then it would have made sense.

We did not remove anything. The WordPress.org community removed the bookmarklet from the open source WordPress software. We use that same software on WordPress.com, so if it changes there, it changes here.

The Press This editor has not been removed on WordPress.com because it hasn’t been removed on Core. On Core the bookmarklet is being replaced by a plugin that still uses that editor. As I said above, though, it’s unlikely we will be integrating that plugin into WordPress.com

We are not forcing anyone to use the Calypso bookmarklet, but if you want to use a bookmarklet, that’s the only one that still exists as it does not form part of Core WordPress.

OK. well Thanks. It’s better than nothing. Thanks

Slapped upside the head again by WP. I want my Press This back. I’m using the classic editor. Thanks but no thanks to the dumbed down editor. I haven’t tried the hard to understand solution yet, primarily because I don’t trust WP to not break anything. And I haven’t read anything that tells me, in plain English, that the solution is one that I can live with.

Well, without knowing what I was doing, I seemed to have solved the problem. I grabbed the free plugin in my settings. And then when I saw it on my blog, I was able to add it to my bookmarks. It works a little differently, but for those, like myself, who use the classic editor, it takes you right to it in a new window. That works for me.

Where do I find the classic editor and the WP editor? How do I get there. If I press something I usually use the Press This button I installed in my bookmarks bar. However, when I do hit the WP button it sometimes puts the link in but most of the time If not all I have to put in the title and the link. It’s the long way around but it works. Is there a shorter and easier way?

Daisymae2017: I don’t know about your machine or anything, but I’m using Pale Moon browser (since Mozilla has jumped on the fake news bandwagon), and windows 7 on one machine and windows 10 on another. Go to https://tpenguinltg.wordpress.com/ where there’s instructions. He, or she, will direct you to get a script handler like Greasemonkey. When you install it, it sits on your toolbar. Everything here is automated. Trust me. I hate geeks. This isn’t hard. Then go to Greasy Forks and type in WordPress. You’ll be taken to tPenguin’s scripts. If you use Firefox, you’ll have little difficulty. If you use Pale Moon, you can check their own growing body of apps and plugins for Pale Moon. As well, Pale Moon is based on Firefox, so some stuff for Firefox works on Pale Moon. When you find the script for re-directing to classic editor for your browser, then click on it and it automatically installs.

I use Google Chrome or Internet Explorer as my browser.

Just check into it. I’ve given you the links. I can’t do more. I do wish geeks were helpful and handy. Alas, They generally are not. All I can say is, Good luck!

I checked out the link and was even more confused. I think I’ll take the long way around. It might be a pain but actually it’s easier.

  • Hi folks. Just wanted to update this that we’ve added a new WP-Admin bookmarklet on WordPress.com. It should work as before, but please start a new thread if you notice any issues.
