Currently with GoDaddy, but considering a change that I easier to manage. Is this a good choice to WordPress? Looking for a website, but is a log site better for a neighborhood ‘information’ site?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi there!

What are your plans for your site? If you could tell us some more details, we’ll be able to advise better.

In general, when you choose to self-host your WordPress site, you become responsible for your own backups, maintenance, security, and site performance, as well as theme and plugin compatibility.

Meanwhile, WordPress.com takes care of all these developer operations in the background, so you can focus on building your website. So, since you mentioned looking for a solution easier to manage, you might want to give WordPress.com a try. Once you sign up with WordPress.com, you will be ready to make your website immediately, without the need for any server-side configurations. You can create a site, a blog, or a website with a blog. That last one sounds like what you’re looking for: https://wordpress.com/support/do-i-need-a-website-a-blog-or-a-website-with-a-blog/.

WordPress.com also offers the benefits of the open-source software, plus managed hosting as a fully integrated SaaS (Software as a Service) solution. This means you will have access to the power and scalability of the latest version of WordPress, plus superior hosting speed, automated backups, and security features on our platform.

You do not need to transfer your domain right away; you can just play around for a bit, see how you like it and make your decision after a few days. You can cancel and refund any annual plan within 14 days (7 days for monthly plans).

The general question is: having initially set up the site via GoDaddy, do they “own” my site name, or did they just establish it for me and my GD fee retains it for me? Then, if I start a new site at WordPress, do I “kill” the GD one?

  • You own your site name (you’re referring to your domain right?).

If you transfer your domain and your site here on WordPress.com, you’ll still be owning them.

    Yes, the domain name. Thanks.
