Why two blogs?

I had a pre-existing WP blog at http://www.opinionaustralia.com and joined WP.Com to get an API key for the spam blocker… yet now it seems I have *two* blogs called Opinion Australia.

To me this seems both odd and a waste of time and space. Surely there is a way of passing out an API key *without* the requirement of having two blogs on the go?

On top of which I was totally unaware the process would involve setting up an extra blog. Makes no sense to me.

Would someone like to explain please?

When you sign up at WordPress.com, you’re getting two things: an API key, and a wordpress.com blog. If all you wanted was the API key, fine… just ignore the blog. It takes up very little space, and no one needs to ever know about it.

It’s very much like signing up at Yahoo! where you get e-mail, a calendar, a games account, etc. Use the stuff you want to use and don’t worry about the stuff you don’t use.

It was a useful way of increasing user numbers while the blog service was in its infancy, and to disentangle the two processes now would be too much trouble.

You may wish to make a post on the redundant blog directing people to your real one, that way you may even get a little bit of extra traffic out of it.
