Why use ASIDES?

I am converting to the new “Morning After” them which allows “Asides”. I guess I’m not very hip, but I don’t see the value of creating an “aside” post. Would someone please explain how they’re used in a practical sense. I’ve read everything I could find in the forum, but fail to see why I’d ever use them.

  • Think of them like Tweets. They’re things you want to mention, as opposed to writing a complete post about.

For example, you may want to say just, “Transformers 3 looks awful,” rather than compose a full-fledged report on the over-use of explosions in modern films and the exploitation of kid-friendly animated series from the 1980s.

I see … but not my cup of tea for my application. However, “asides” could be useful as a quick linking mechanism to older posts or to other websites.

I use them to answer any questions I’ve received that don’t merit a whole post, to advertise an upcoming post or to thank readers. Sometimes I include links. I’m not a “Tweeter” either. :-)

Yeah but what I do not understand is why isn’t there a way to limit the number of them which appear on the front page? If Asides are so trivial and quick, it does make sense for us to only display the more recent ones, as opposed to ALL of them, thus cluttering the homepage very quickly. And I am not happy with the “solution” of changing them into posts when you do not want them to appear on the front page, as suggested by Lance here : https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/morning-after-asides?replies=16. Because what if this then sends a new notification to my subscribers? What if it changes the URL of the aside/post? Sounds bizarre they just assumed we’d want to keep them ALL on homepage.

I plan to simply delete them. I don’t publish anything as an aside that I want to keep long-term. If it’s important, I would make it a post. If you want it to stay on the frontpage for a while, make it sticky.

It’s not ideal, but it is something I’m willing to do. After all, The Morning After is an excellent theme and it’s free. I guess we can leave suggestions in the Ideas forum. WordPress does make changes to themes from time to time.

I tried to delete my one aside, and it is still there – it appears when someone places a comment. It is actually a replay of my profile bi-line.
