Why won't a particular page delete or change it's parent page?

  • Unknown's avatar

I wanted to move a sub-page up to the main menu, but even after changing it’s status to “no parent” a million times, it wouldn’t move the page (I left several days, and checked on multiple devices). I managed to get the page to appear on the main menu by creating a duplicate using the “copy page” feature, but when I went to delete the original page – it won’t disappear! I’ve trashed the page & set it to private and still it shows on my site! Please help :D

The particular page on the site is “homework sessions” under “About.” I wanted to move it to the main menu.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

Go to Appearance → Menus to edit your menu.

Then follow the instructions here to reorder or remove items from your menu:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#changing-the-order-creating-sub-menus

    Hope that helps!

Thank you, but my issue is not to do with arranging menus or sub-menus; I have *a page that will not delete from my site no matter what I do.*

I’ve (a) made it private & (b) moved it to the trash, but it’s still on my site.

    Best,

    RA

What is the exact URL starting with http:// of the Page in question?

    Hi,

Can you post here the link of the page that you are not able to remove as well as the link of the new page?

I suspect it has something to do with the fact that the slug for your new page is named exactly the same as the old page. That’s why the old page redirects to the new page.

Try changing the name of the link to something else and see if that works. If you are in your editor, it’s called Permalink. If you are in Page > All Pages, it’s called Slug.

In the menu, do you still need to remove “Homework Sessions” from under “About”? If you do, you need to go to Appearance → Menus to remove the link “Homework Sessions” from the drop-down.

Then follow the instructions here to reorder or remove items from your menu:

    Is this it? http://jacobbeaudry.wordpress.com/homework-sessions/
If it is then it is not a child page of your About page at all. And you have not removed it from the custom menu, and you have not deleted it here > Dashboard > Pages > All Pages – hover over page title and click “Trash”.

but this now redirects to the “homework sessions” page on the main menu, but if you click on the “About” tab on the main menu, “homework sessions” is still listed as a sub-page – but that page has been deleted.

    thank you kindly,

    J.

As I explained in the first post: I duplicated the page to get it to show up on the main menu. I *want* it on the main menu, *not* as a sub-page in About.

It *still* shows as a sub-page in about, but now redirects to the new (duplicate) page.

I have a screen shot showing the page in my trash and another showing it as a sub-page …

When you go to Appearance > Menus, do you see “Homework Sessions” under “About”?

If you do, you need to delete it from there as well. Click the down arrow, then click Remove.

@honeysilvas, thank you – that was the issue. I expected that if I made a change to a page’s menu attributes from the page editor, that this would interface with the wysiwyg appearance editor. In particular, even setting “no parent page” on the page editor was insufficient to get the page to show up on the menu. It seems strange to me that the appearance editor allows one to add page names to the menu for pages that don’t even exist!

Again, thank you kindly for your help. I hope it might be possible to improve this functionality in the future.

    Kind regards,

    RA

    Hi, @mcgillcalhelp

    You’re welcome! Glad that worked!

The menu is designed to be separate from the parent-child relationship of pages so that you can re-order your menu easily without messing up your pages’ relationships.

Next time you need to reorder your menu, you don’t have to copy and delete the page. Just go to Appearance > Menu, then drag and drop to reorder.

    Happy blogging! :)
