Why Won't Comment Moderation save IP addresses in WordPress Discussion Settings?

I have tried to save an IP address that is SPAM and put in under comment moderation in Discussion settings but for some reason it just doesn’t save. What’s going on that I can’t save.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

IP addresses are not unique, and you should not use an IP address to block someone from commenting. Doing that will just cause you to also block every other person whose ISP assigns them that same IP address, while the actual spammer will likely connect via a different IP next time.

To block someone, enter their username, email address or site link, each on its own line, or if it’s spam mark the comment as spam at My Site ->Comments, so that our automatic spam filters will learn to start filtering comments like that going forward.

I don’t want to block from commenting. It is comment moderation not comment blocking. It won’t let me save. I don’t want to block. Under settings after you click Discussion, there is a block that says Comment Moderation. Under where it it says Comment Moderation it says and quote “Hold a comment in the queue if it contains 2 or more links. (A common characteristic of comment spam is a large number of hyperlinks.)”
Under that it says and I quote “When a comment contains any of these words in its content, name, URL, email, or IP, it will be held in the moderation queue. One word or IP per line. It will match inside words, so “press” will match “WordPress””.
All I want to do is for the IP address to go to moderation queue first so it can be approved by me. Hope this helps.

  • Hi daisymae2017, I noticed you already have quite a few addresses in the moderation list, and I’m wondering if that’s causing part of the issue. Perhaps there’s a limit most folks don’t hit.

Would you mind trying something for us? Go ahead and take out all of the listings there. You can paste into a text file in case you want to go back to that later. I noticed all of those addresses SHOULD be clear spam, not just moderated, so if you’re getting those coming through please mark them as spam so that our system will recognize it as such next time.

Then try adding the IP. If that still does not work, can you share the IP here so we can see if it will work on our end?

The IP I’m I’m trying to add is: http://www.sexyuhid.website . Would it help if I just put any sexy website?

  • That’s actually a website address rather than an IP.

Can you remove all of those? If you’re getting spammed by those folks we should let our spam filter take care of it.

Or you could just remove all of the links, and add just the word “sexy” — that would put any comments containing that word into moderation.

Thanks. Just removed all the links and put “sexy”. Hope this takes care of it. You and your staff are great. Thanks.
