Why won't just plain "wordpress.com" come up?

  I’m a total newbie. I signed up to start a blog, and thereafter I couldn’t just get the wordpress.com URL to come up. If I typed that in, I got a weird page I’d never seen before, had nothing to do with the theme I’d chosen… The only way I could get back to wordpress.com (and here — to even do some research) was to completely delete my blog. It was no loss, because I hadn’t done much, but it seemed like as soon as I signed up for a blog, I was a prisoner inside wordpress.com somewhere and I couldn’t get out.
