Why won't my edited image display in my post?

In order to save space, I scale my uploaded image (originally 2mb down to less than 1mb) then I crop it, making it yet smaller in size (200-600kb). But then it will not display in my post in either edit or post preview. Why not? I would like to see how it looks before publishing. I’m sure I am missing something obvious! Thanks.

It looks like you’re displaying your photos using the image gallery. To be able to see and edit your photos, you have to be viewing within the Gallery screen.
