Why won't my featured image display in the recent post area of my theme?

My featured image won’t display properly on my website. After initially publishing my post, the featured image shows in its area in my theme, but after a while the featured image is only on display above the post, not in the featured post area of my theme.

Your current theme requires the featured image to have a minimum size of 960pixels in width and 120pixels in height. Please make sure your featured image is bigger than that.
If you still encounter issues, please let me know the exact post you you were referring to.

My current featured post certainly meets that minimum requirement (http://dailydalek.wordpress.com/2011/11/10/twice-a-week-for-certain/)
The preceding post’s image did not meet the requirements. (http://dailydalek.wordpress.com/2011/11/05/assonate/), which could explain why it did not display properly (only off-white was visible in the image area)
I just found this (http://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/) and it says that for my theme, the minimum requirements for the image I’m talking about is 620 x 380.
To be clear, I wasn’t referring to my header image – I have no problem with its display. I was referring to the image displayed for the latest featured post. The issue apparently is different with the current featured post because in this case, the background in that area is now simply black.
Also, in both cases, the featured image was displayed properly on my site for a time (perhaps an hour?) before they were no longer visible.

Yes, in that case the image will need to match the required dimensions.
In the past, we had stretched the image, which caused several other problems.

I tried cropping to match the appropriate dimensions and the featured image above each post on my page worked, just as it did before, however, I still have nothing displaying in my featured post area.
I have used the same theme without having to worry about such issues with image display on my other blog, (http://rofthep.wordpress.com/). I’m a little frustrated since the images are quite important this time, as they are the sole content.
Other suggestions?

Okay, I seem to have stumbled on something of a solution – under “Theme options” my featured post was set as “none: use the most recent post”. As soon as I selected one of my categories, it worked.
I’ve reselected “none: use the most recent post” so I’ll see how it works out. I’m hoping whatever was going on somehow I fixed it with your help…
