Why won't my page publish?

  • Unknown's avatar

I created a page, but it will not publish with the content that I had saved in the draft. I got so frustrated, I deleted it and started over, but the old page is still there, still without the content I had saved. I can’t get the new page to publish either. I have wasted hours on this problem. Please help!

    Hi there,

I see three draft pages for your site. Which is the page you are having trouble with? What is happening when you try to publish it?

    Thanks for the clarification!

    Dear Happiness Engineer,

Thank you SO much for your help! It’s such a relief.

The same problem actually happened to two pages, both attempts at “About the Editors.” I’d since thrown them in the trash, but I restored them so you could see them. In frustration, I had emptied the content from them as well. The original content is all in the new “About the Editors” page which, if you look at the URL, is actually “beast-keepers.” I have no idea why this worked, but I third made a new page but this time tried naming it something other than “About the Editors.” It would be nice to know why, though.

The three drafts you saw were one of my attempts to bypass the problem by using another page as a parent and making three separate editor pages for each of the three editors. But the new “About the Editors” parent page had the same problem, which was:

The URL for About the Editors was about-the-editors, as is automatically created. I selected “default template” and filled the page with the content we wanted. It all looked fine in the draft.

When I selected “preview” or “publish,” all that appeared was a blank page with the header photo (of the tattooed girl with the horns) and a side bar. An error message told me “It looks like your portfolio items may not have featured images – make sure to set a featured image for each of your portfolio items, or they won’t show up on this page!”

It made no sense because it was a default template, not a portfolio template. It was also showing a sidebar even though I hadn’t chosen “with sidebar.” Now the one “About the Editors” page created 2/4 will preview correctly, but the original, created 8/20/12, still will not. It would be good to know what was going wrong so I can avoid it in the future!

    Thanks again so very much!

    Hi there,

I’m seeing the same problem you are. I’m not sure why that’s happening with that one draft page. But I’m glad you were able to get an About the Editors page up and working properly on your site.

If you’d prefer to have the URL for the page show about-the-editors instead of beast-keepers, you can edit the permalink for the page from:

    https://animalliterarymagazine.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=547&action=edit

The edit button shows next to the permalink, between the title area and the page text area.

    Best!
