Why won't my photos display properly?

  • Unknown's avatar

I recently converted my WordPress.com blog to WordPress.org (about three weeks ago); but I’ve been having a few difficulties with getting it to work the way I want it to.

My most pressing issue is that the photos in my older posts (specifically those posted before October 11th of this year) show only as thumbnail placeholders instead of as the full images themselves. Most of the photos in question will still open properly if you click on the thumbnails (but not all); but in the posts themselves the photos look like broken links until you click on them. The images all behaved the way I wanted them to when I was on WordPress.com; so I’m not sure what happened.

As for the history of this problem:
I had a post on 10/4 and another on 10/11.
The 10/4 post (and all earlier posts) has the problem described above (URL below).

    http://www.deekadelic.com/2014/10/04/the-rumors-are-true/

The 10/11 post does not have the problem, nor do any of the more recent posts (URL below).

    http://www.deekadelic.com/2014/10/11/addicted-to-dogs/

I’ve been holding off on continuing to post on my blog, as I don’t want to attract attention to it while it is in this state of upheaval/disrepair; but needless to say, I am getting very restless in my need to get this resolved.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you
    Deek

    Hi Deek,

Since your site is self-hosted I can’t go into your site files and verify how everything is setup. However, I’m assuming when you transferred the site you used our Export tool:

    Export Your Website’s Content

That tool is not always able to export all image files, as noted here:

    Export Your Website’s Content

I recommend you re-upload the images in question to your self-hosted media library, edit the post, and re-insert the image from your new media library.

In the future, you can find documentation and support for your self-hosted site here:

I did use the export tool in WordPress.com; and the size of my export file was far below the listed max file size. Either way, though, there are way too many posts with way too many photos for me to manually go reinsert them all; and anyway, the part of my blog that people like the most are the captions of the photos; and I couldn’t possibly recreate all those even if I wanted to. There’s probably around four or five hundred of them. So I need to simply move the photos, with their captions, exactly as they were, from the old blog to the new one; and I need to do it pretty much today. I can’t keep putting my readers off like this. It’s killing my blog.

I would go back to my old blog and re-export; but now when I go to the old blog address, I am routed to the new self-hosted blog; so I don’t even know how to get to the old site. I’m not sure if that would do the trick anyway; but it would at least be worth a try.

At this point I’m about to ready to hand over my login credentials and just have somebody else who knows how to do this do it for me. I can’t continue on with this back and forth. I need this fixed.

    Hi Deek,

This is happening because you purchased a site redirect upgrade. addicted2dirt.wordpress.com will always redirect to deekadelic.com while that upgrade is in place. If you’d like, I can remove it and refund its purchase ($13), or you can manage the redirect here:

    https://addicted2dirt.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=my-upgrades

If you just want to access the old site for its content, I’d recommend visiting your /wp-admin/ directly:

    http://addicted2dirt.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

At this point I’m about to ready to hand over my login credentials and just have somebody else who knows how to do this do it for me. I can’t continue on with this back and forth. I need this fixed.

We do offer a guided transfer service to help with these transitions to .org for a one-time fee:

I understand why the blog is re-directing to the new blog; after all I purchased that re-direct option quite deliberately. But I did that on the assumption that the Export from my old blog had moved all of my posts and everything that came with them, photos and all. Not bringing the photos over, and those photos having to be thus manually re-inserted, seems to me like it would be a total deal-breaker for virtually every blogger who tries to make the jump from WordPress.com to WordPress.org.

Is it possible to temporarily de-activate the re-direct, then re-export is some way that will bring the photos and everything else along, and then re-upload to the new blog? I wouldn’t mind doing that, since it would only over-write one post, since I’ve only made one post on the new blog. I could easily re-post that one post without much trouble; and it would certainly be worth getting this resolved in one fell swoop.

Is there no way to do this without paying for the $129 guided install? That would have been worth it to me a month ago; but at this point I don’t want to pay all that money for the service, since the point of the service, as I see it, is to make sure you DON’T have a month dead in the water, as I now have. Now the damage is done, and I just to correct this problem in the simplest way possible that won’t cost me money. Frankly, I cannot afford to pay for this guided transfer; and I literally cannot wait any longer. And seeing as how I paid all of this money just to establish my self-hosted site (which has so far done me no good whatsoever), I kind of feel like I should be able to get some help without shelling out a whole bunch of more money.

When I made the switch to .org, nothing I read mentioned that this problem with the photos might happen, which to me is unacceptable; and I don’t think there should have been any reasonable expectation that that would (or could) happen, or that I would anticipate it without it being mentioned in some of the transfer literature. If I missed something to this effect that was in fact explicitly stated, then that’s a different story; and I understand that that is a possibility. Did I in fact fail to see something to this effect?

Everything is in my place with my new blog, except for the photos.
So what I really need is to find somebody with whom I can have an active discussion, who can show me how to do this myself. Is that an option?

What I mean by “active discussion” is either a phone conversation, a live-chat, or a temporary screen-handover. Thank you

You do not have to de-activate the re-direct to run the export again. You can reach the export tool by going directly into the /wp-admin/ dashboard of your blog:

    https://addicted2dirt.wordpress.com/wp-admin/tools.php?page=export-choices

However, we only have the one export tool. As we note in its support documentation, we attempt to move all media however these errors with uploaded media files do sometimes occur:

    Export Your Website’s Content

It is though, possible, that your second export attempt will correctly grab the media so it’s certainly worth another shot.

Is there no way to do this without paying for the $129 guided install?

To help moving away from our services, we offer either that one-time Guided Transfer upgrade, or the free DIY solution outlined here, which you’ve basically gone through:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

When I made the switch to .org, nothing I read mentioned that this problem with the photos might happen, which to me is unacceptable; and I don’t think there should have been any reasonable expectation that that would (or could) happen, or that I would anticipate it without it being mentioned in some of the transfer literature. This error is mentioned in the specifications of the WordPress Export tool:

    Export Your Website’s Content

    From that article:

Note: This will ONLY export your posts, pages, comments, categories, and tags; uploads and images may need to be manually transferred to the new blog. The current version of the WordPress.org installation gives you the option to import uploaded files, but the blog you are importing from must be live and serving images properly in order for it to work. So, do not delete your blog until after media files have successfully been imported into the new blog.

If you are planning to export your content to another blog platform, it’s best to manually download and save your images from your WordPress.com Media Library to before trying to import/upload them into the new blog.

What I mean by “active discussion” is either a phone conversation, a live-chat, or a temporary screen-handover.

We do offer live-chat as a support option pending availability of Happiness Engineers, you can access that by visiting your dashboard:

    http://addicted2dirt.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

If staff is available, you’ll see a blue box appear at the bottom-right of your screen that says “Howdy! How can we help?” that will allow you to start a live chat conversation.

However, if that second export does not correct the media upload, I’m afraid the answer to fixing the images will be to re-upload the affected images, then edit the post to make sure the image points to the correct path.

    Best,

    -Alex G.

Okay, I can definitely try re-doing the export and load then.

And if that fails, the live chat should do the trick.

    I appreciate the detailed response.

    Thank you

  • Unknown's avatar

Success!! The second export worked; and now I am where I’ve been trying to get for weeks now!

Thank you for explaining about doing the second export. I had no idea this could all be fixed so simply.

    Case closed.
