Why wont my sidebar appear on my twenty thirteen theme?

  I switched my theme to Twenty Thirteen specifically so I would have a side bar that is suppose to appear on the right hand side. Once I activated the theme, the side bar disappeared and I only have a footnote area for widgets. The theme description said the sidebar is optional. How do I get it back?

  On your dashboard go to Appearance>Customize. On the right side of your screen you should have a list of items, one of which should be theme options. Here you should be able to set where your sidebar appears. Remember to save your changes.
